power steering?
How hard is it to put on power steering on this year truck? I don't have one but I could probably get one cheap around here. Really don't want to drive a truck without it.
Thanks

Hi Robby,
What i've been hearing guys using on there '60-'66 trucks sbc's is a Rez kit, that uses a '73-'87 powersteering pump, and power steering steering box. David

This article should answer your questions about the Rez kit. This is the safe way to adapt pwr steering to your truck. Check it out.
http://www.classicperform.com/power6066.htm your other options for the shaft would be to purchase a shortened steering shaft from chevy duty, or purchase Borgeson u-joints/dampner and install with a DD shaft. If you have thoughts of installing a later model tilt column, now is the time. BTW- If your truck is auto 79-81 Chevy/GMC Vans have a good canidate because they also still have their ignition switch in the dash instead of the column...if you have a manual trans, then you'll need to look for something else. It is so easy to convert to power steering on a 60-66 truck. I didn't use a kit, just spent $160.00 for a steering box and pump off a '85 chevy truck and 2 hours later, I had power steering on my '64. It is not a bolt on, but almost. You do have to fabracate a bracket, but it is so easy. You also want to get the rag joint and lower protion of the steering shaft from the doner truck. If you use a '86 steering box, be careful to get the box and pump from the same doner truck. Why? At some time during the '86 year, chevy changed from standard to metric threads.
I wish I had photographed the conversion, but it all went so quick and easy I didn't see a need. If you wish more detail, I can give it. Shorty |

I was looking my current box on the truck and it looks that same as the power assist boxes.
I was just thinking of grabbing a saginaw pump and box w/lines, fab a braket and be done. How well do the steering shaft and newer style boxes (late 70's) line up as far as holes and such???
