no more split rims
Good evening
I removed my split rim color matched original 16in 8hole wheels from my 66c20 today. I put on the modern plainjane white steelies. It will be nice not to injure myself when I have a flat! Is there any interest at all for the split rims? Lowell |

Re: no more split rims
Like yourself, most owners avoid the split rims. That said, there's a few of us interested in putting our trucks back to stock, including the split rims. I'd love to find a nice set within a reasonable driving distance.

Re: no more split rims
Yep those are Split Rims (KILLERS) and they are for Tube Type Bias Ply tires ONLY.
Good luck on finding a tire shop that is equipped to mount and inflate those , They need a cage to contain the explosion of the rim. Many a tire installer have been killed or seriously injured inflating old split rims. You would have to find a Truck Tire Shop that is equipped and willing to mess with them. Now before the " I've been doing split rims for years" crowd jumps in, They have been LUCKY and the next one could be the one your luck runs out on. Back in the day the idea of a split rim was to make it possible to repair the tube in the field using hand tools and a hand pump. That was then, when people didn't sue if they were injured or killed . And 50 years to the rim a bit of rust and wear on the lock ring and rim and your looking at a potential Killer. These wheels have been known to blow the split rim off going down the road and kill someone else just driving along minding there own business. Besides all that The wheel is real heavy and so is the tube & tire, and don't stop or turn well.

Re: no more split rims
FWIW, those are NOT the ones that everyone talks about killing people; the ones that earned the "widowmaker" moniker are the Firestone RH-5 type. The locking ring type is still used today.

Re: no more split rims
rims do not kill anyone, it is usually carelessness or ignorance that causes the problem. Just like guns do not kill people; someone has to pull the trigger.

Re: no more split rims
1948 chevy truck split rim just about killed my dad.
He was just putting a little air in the tire and the ring blew off taking his whole scalp off.

Re: no more split rims
I'm not going to turn this thread into a debate.
But some things are built that are later found to be hazardous prone. That's why things are recalled, or discontinued. People have been killed by faulty designed equipment. How insensitive it would be to say someone who got killed because some piece of equipment failed was their own fault because they were ignorant and careless.

Re: no more split rims
"Split rim" defines a lot of things. Most agree the Firestone RH-5 was a bad design, but not all "split rims" are those. Also, the wheel that almost took your dad's head off may very well have been previously damaged by someone else.
