Remote Starter
Cleaning out the garage the other day when I stumbled across a box of stuff I had for my old s10. In there was the unopened remote starter I had bought to install, but never got around to. Anyone on here run a remote starter on one of their swaps? I know many of them came from the factory with remotes, but I don't know if a swap is any different.

Re: Remote Starter
Most of the aftermarket ones I've seen were total trash until you spent $250+ for a GOOD one, professionally installed. Its more wiring than the whole LS swap itself.

Re: Remote Starter
I have DEI remote start/alarms on most of my swaps. The remote start part isn't really all that involved, but the whole package does add up to a lot of wiring when you start adding in starter kill, keyless entry, illuminated entry ect. As Br3w said, if it's a cheap one from like Wal-Mart or something, then you would probably be better off with out it. I bought one of those $50 jobs to put on a winter beater and it never did work right. I took it back and got a Python (DEI) and it worked great up until the day I junked the car, then I pulled it off and now it's on my green beater '71 swb.

Re: Remote Starter
I have a VIPER alarm with remote start on my 71 with 5.3 fuel injection. It works great but wasn't cheap.

Re: Remote Starter
My unit is pretty decent, just wondered who had done it already and if any sort of bypass like Passlock was needed. I know my s10 needed one, so I wasn't sure about this.

Re: Remote Starter
I'd think if VATS was deleted for your swap, there would be nothing else that would really interfere. I thought the PassLock thing was one of GM's aborted concepts. All it ever did was cause guys with Fbodies to complain...

Re: Remote Starter
I thought that was the case too, just wasn't sure. Don't know much about passlock, just that the s10 needed a ~$30 module to bypass it in order to install the remote start with the factory 4.3L. My understanding is that Passlock is/was tied into the VATS like you said, and since it's disabled in a swap PCM it doesn't need to be bypassed. Since my s10 was still factory I needed to get the module, or get a tune and bypass it like I did here. Thanks for the heads up. I'll post up later if and when I do this.

Re: Remote Starter
I have command start on one of the blazers.. actually the one I'm doing a swap on right now.. The PO was the guy that put it in. Looks like he just spliced into the connections that he needed., and thats it. The antenna has been cut so its useless now (impedance matched), also doesn't help there was no keyFob. I've looked up the Part number and its apparently discontinued. I just left it in. I haven't got my harness back from Current performance yet so I have no idea if it'll interfere. I've never used current performance before any one have comments or reviews? sorry to get side tracked.

Re: Remote Starter
VATS is Passlock, that's what GM calls their antitheft system. Since you have the VATS tuned out, you don't need anything else. The $30 bypass you needed for the S10 sent a signal to the BCM to trick the PCM into thinking the correct resistance key was in the ignition.

Re: Remote Starter
but what actually happened to the thing they called "Passlock" that would flash on the dash on the 90's GM stuff. Like even before VATS.

Re: Remote Starter
I actually used CPW for my harness. It turned out awesome and I'm very happy with it.
