Ls Swap Questions
Well I got a 2006 6.0 ss motor with transmission that I'm planning to get in my 84 c10 sometime next year. The transmission is an awd and my truck is a 2wd. I want to say its a 4l65e. I wanted to see if I could still use this transmission or do I need to purchase another one. Also should I drain all fluids out of the motor. Cause I dont want it to go bad on me. What headers are recommended for these swaps. The motor didnt come with the manifolds and somewhere I read that theres a clearance issue with manifolds. Thanks in advance for reading and will appreciate any info.

Re: Ls Swap Questions
I can't say for sure on trans I would think that you can change the tailshaft though. For exhaust manifolds, I used manifolds off of a camaro. They fit perfectly in my 91 burb when I did my 6.0 swap no clearance issues!

Thanks Pinsco63, does it matter what year and engine size for the manifolds to fit? |

Re: Ls Swap Questions
The trans should be a 4L65E, You will need a 2wd output shaft with VSS tone wheel, 2wd Extension housing, & VSS sensor.
The Front pump, Input drum, & 2nd gear servo will need to be remove to access the snap ring to swap the output shafts. |

Re: Ls Swap Questions
Thanks, It looks like there more to it than what I thought. Hope this is not very expensive to have done. I prefer to use the original transmission that came with the engine. Another question. the transfer case on this transmission was recently replace with a new one.I know there are not cheap, what would be a reasonable price to ask for it?

Cline- your usually the go-to guy on trannies, but I believe the tranny is actually the 4l70e in those TBSS trucks (I don't know about silverado SS). It costs enough thats its usually not worth doing. That tranny is decent, but not anything special that can't be replaced or upgraded easy enough. You have options to choose from (4l60-65-70-80). The 60e being the weakest, up to the 80e having the reputation for its robustness. Sell the awd tranny and transfer case, as some of the TBSS guys want to find good cores or replacments when they blow them up., you'd probably have a decent audience on Performancetruck.net (the sister site to ls1tech). Then go buy a 2wd tranny that will work for your needs. Any of the ones listed above, in a 2wd variety, will bolt fine to the motor and have a usable output shaft/yolk that you can then mate your DS to. TBSS manifolds (i.e. what would have been stock on that motor) are extremely popular on these truck swaps because they take up very little space. The GenV camaro headers will fit in many applications, as will SOME applications of the Gen III Camaro headers, the Doug Thorley swap headers...and a few others. Keep in mind that; the combination of engine stands, mounts or mount adapters, which perches, which set of holes (or how forward or aft you mount the perches, if using a custom perch or the sliding type)...AND things like modified or aftermarket crossmembers, transmission choice (for collector clearance) will ALL affect how things fit.

Re: Ls Swap Questions
For the sake of argument (which you know I like)... IMO if you needed to pay someone due to lack of space/tools/time/whatever, it would still be cheaper just to grab another 2wd tranny, assuming that the 4wd trans your starting is in roughly the same shape.
A shop would charge at least an hour of labor as a minimum, plus whatever parts cost, meaning your bill would be $200-350 (depending on what they charge you for the parts). You could pick up a craigslist auto tranny for $4-700, but then can recoup the cost of the existing tranny you would be getting rid of. Costs end up even if not less. If you have a second tranny to pull the tailshaft off of, or can locate one cheaply and aren't afraid to open the trans up, DIY (as with most of these projects) is cheaper. I'm curious now that we've mentioned it... Is the combo from a Trailblazer SS or a Silverado SS?
