How hard is it to Scrap the EFi and go to a Carb Setup ?

Polution controll is not a biggie. Just sick of how ****ty the Burban runs compared to the carbed vehicles around here. I guess I need a new pair of heads Intake and Carb HEI. What else ?

It would be a lot simpler and cheaper to fix whatever is wrong with the injection. FI is much more reliable, more fuel efficient, more responsive, makes more power, and is just all-around better than a carburetor.

you havent driven a TBI truck before have you? throttle response is way slower with TBI, and power seems to be down a bit too. you are correct in they are more fuel efficient though.

to me, tbi is like a carb controlled by a computer, a very slow computer.

I have to agree. Stock TBI's are not made for power. Give me a Q-jet anyday. I agree they are way more fuel efficient over a carb and start easier. If you are after fuel economy, keep the TBI. But, when it starts screwing up on you, good luck.

Now to the question at hand. It wouldn't be hard to swap from TBI to carb. You would need an intake, non computer controlled HEI, and lower the fuel pressure. You could either use a regulator and stock pump or go for a fuel pump with the correct pressure for a carb and remove the stock pump from the tank and install a regular pickup.

That's what I though.

I think I am going to do it . Screw the gas efficient part.

If I can get going faster off the line would'nt that make me get better MPG ?

remember the center bolted heads that were used in 87 on up take a diffrent intake maifold than the older style heads. If you leave in the stock fuel pump make sure you hook the oil pressure saftey switch back up "looks like an oil press sending unit but its located back under the distributor.

My motor was originally EFI and was converted to carb. It makes some damned good power with a small cam, intake, and headers. Those stock smog heads are kinda garbage though. I think Ill be saving up for some Vortecs.

Probably have to change the intake. Have to redo the fuel pick up.

I have read that GM made the TBI a little lathargic on purpose. The reason was sort of a traction control. It makes more power then a 86 Carb did but it basicly wont give you full throttle till it get's moving. Now there are many things you can do to it and all of them are a lot easier to do then swaping on the carb. Chip takes some of the slug out of it. Some fuel pressure adjustments etc. www.3rdgen.com has some good info. www.ck5.com on the main second gen forum has a links post at the top with a whole bunch of EFI links.

My 88 454 Burb basicly won't spin a tire but it will meve 8k no problem. That's the FI keeping me from just lighting them up. The reasoning is it is supose to save fuel. Get on the gas hard and it will get wound up. All the punks in Hondas are scared of my grampa burb now and stay the hell away. They know they can't get past it in a straight line till about 60. We have a spot where all the punks must get together and talk about jumping traffic before the lane runs out. I have about put 4 in the ditch now.

Now I thought my cat was going bad and I "Temperarly" put a test pipe on it. It peped it up. New chip will can take a lot of that out. Spacer will help some. You can boost the fuel pressure and pick up a little power wide open. Wide open goes open loop so it will make it run a bit richer with higher fuel pressure.


Look around...there is a lot you can do to that FI that will still be in line what a new intake and carb is going to set you back.

Any performance mods availible to the 88-92 trucks with TBI will work for your '87. I think you can make it run just as good as a carb setup.

Yep I ran it into a Buick 4 door car. Now it runs really nice and drives good too. (Just kidding it does not drive at all )
