Couple rearend questions.

I have a 64 c10 getting ready to work on. Will the original 6 lug axles accept a 5x4 3/4 redill?

Also i found a rearend out of a GMC. Will the leaf spring rearend bolt right up to my trailing arms?

I think the biggest issue you might run into is the flange that sticks out, that centers the drum. I think 5 on 4 3/4" has a smaller flange and you might find wheels that won't fit over the larger flange of the 6 on 5 1/2" pattern. You would want to check whatever wheels you are going to use to see if there is enough clearance with this.

As for axle swap, unless you are using another 63-72 trailing arm axle, you will need to remove all the bracket and weld on the correct trailing arm mounting pads. A few different companies make these pads and they are specific to use on trailing arm setups. The normal leaf spring pad will not work.

Thanks, on the weld on pads, it might be easier to find a trailing arm set up rearend? Instead of going through all the mock up of making sure the pads are positioned exactly in the right spot?

You can convert to the 5 x 4.75 wheel bolt pattern, but you will have to plug at least a couple of the 6 lug holes. Then as chevy_mike said, the hub register for the 5 x 4.75 pattern is much smaller than what your axles have now. IIRC the 5 x 4.75 hub register is ~2.75" and the hub registers on your axles are 3.5"

Can the center hub be machined down to the smaller size? Or is there not enough material there?

Yes it can be machined down. It is solid

You can swap parts from any year truck 12 bolt into any year truck 12 bolt housing. The parts don't have to be the same year as the housing. A couple things you need to watch for is the '63-'64's had the 17 spline axles and spider gears, and the axle length changed in late '70.The truck 12 bolts were used from '63-'82

CaptainFab, I also have a question on this topic, I have the opportunity to purchase a late 50's half ton bed converted into a trailer and it looks like it has an Eaton HO rear end and was wondering if the rear carrier was interchangeable from the half ton model to the 3/4 ton model, just the guts. and what was the ratio on the older half ton rear ends?

No the parts are not interchangable between the Eaton HO32 (1/2 ton) and the Eaton HO52/72 (3/4 and 1 ton). In my experience most of the Eaton HO32's had 3.90 gears. There was an optional 3.38 gear, but those are rare.

Ok sweet, I'm just trying to find that "unicorn" rear end for my HO52 so I don't have to do 60-ish down the I-5, lol. I'll look around the area and if you happen to have the stamp code for those two rear ends you listed, I'd be willing to use those in my search.

No need for tailing arms with leaf springs tho. Just take em off and run the springs... At least until you gather the stuff to needed to mock up coil springs and the arms...

I already have the trailing arms and coil springs. Thats why id like to just find a rearend that will work with them.
