4.11's Pros and cons ?
Hey guys im Looking at buying a 69' c10 rear axle for Christine im told it has 4.11 gears. My question is what are the pros and cons of the 4.11's. My trucks got a pretty stock 4 bolt 350 that im swapping from 2 to 4 barrel carb. I plan to take Christine down down to the track on the weekends but also paln to daily drive her.

Re: 4.11's Pros and cons ?
A LONG TIME AGO I had a 65 GTO, it had something like 3:50's in the rear, I found a set of something like 4:11's and put them in ...REAL PAINFUL! ...Was great getting on the freeway, but doing 3000 RPM to do 55 just ate up the gas, and was like running around in 2nd gear all the time! After a couple of months I changed it back. I've read (since then) that 3:90's were the normal limit for street/strip use, I have 3:73's in my truck now and it eats gas pretty good. Unless you live at the drag strip, I'd suggest not going over 3:73's! My $0.02 anyway, good luck!

I would be looking for a OD tranny if I did it. I have 3:73's with a 700R4 and love it.

Re: 4.11's Pros and cons ?
If you run 33 inch tires and an od trans you'll be fine....the stock 3/4 chevys came with 4.11's...my 64 has them. But as said..if you were gonna keep those small tires on there and run that low a rear end ratio..then that'll be one screamin puppy....You should put a Nascar V8 in there....then you'll peak torque at 6,000 rpm! That'll be the perfect power band! LOL!

This is a great combination for street and highway.

Need an OD trans, but the OP left all discussion of that vital bit out of the conversation... Duh.
There are plenty of calculators available a web search away for those willing to look that will tell MPH at speed vs tire diameter and diff ratio. Maybe tire diameter is a tough measurement? |

Re: 4.11's Pros and cons ?
It really depends on how you use the truck. I'm running a 350, Richmond Super T10 4 speed manual, and 4.10 (Dana 44) rear gears. I'm retired and the truck is 95% around town driving - almost never sees the freeway. The gears are perfect for me. Accelerates like a bullet (fun) but 60 mph is right around 3,000 rpms. For mostly 50 mph and below its a blast.

Re: 4.11's Pros and cons ?
My daily driver has 4.37 gears and 25.5" tall tires... 3100 rpm at 60 mph. Drive it all over the place, including 50+ mile trips on the interstate at 75 mph/3800 rpm. I like the always instant throttle response since the engine is up where it makes power all the time. Probably going with 4.56 or 4.88 gears in my C10, but it'll have a .50 sixth gear for cruising.
