Engine removal advice please
Catchn up on the forum, waiting for garage to warm up thought Id seek some experienced advice.
1964 IL6 w/ 3 spd man Some thoughts I would like to discuss: It looks like my hoist is not going to reach in far enough to reach a good "midpoint" so I will probably need to remove the bumper. It would appear that removing the entire front valance / grill assy would make things easier but is it necessary? Can I pull this with the trans attached? getting enough angle with as high as this truck is may be an issue? Thought about removing the wheels and setting it down on stands but that may be an issue if I need to reposition the truck during the pull. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Todd |

Re: Engine removal advice please
We did my 65 I6 as follows
Drop trans Pull hood Yank engine leave bell in place Note I have the radiator on the most forward mounts. We did not pull it. An i6 rad in the rear mounts may have to come out. |

Re: Engine removal advice please
Unless you absolutely need to pull the trans, I wouldn't, but I would pull the radiator out of the way. One slight bad swing with the hoist could turn into a couple hundred dollar "uh-oh".
To gain the most amount of clearance, a lot of guys just pull the whole front clip in one piece. It's fewer bolts, but maybe not necessary unless you are changing some major parts and need extra room for test fits, etc. |

Re: Engine removal advice please
I just pulled a 350SBC/SM420 combo all together. Had to remove the hood to get the height necessary for the hoist. Pulled the radiator to prevent destroying it. Used an engine leveler from Harbor Freight to tilt as needed. It is a cheap leveler but it worked.

Re: Engine removal advice please
I haven't removed the 292 6 banger outta my 64 yet...but I removed the entire front clip just cause I wanted to. It isn't necessary at all...just the hood, radiator, and support panel and you should be able to pull it straight out....you can remove the bumper as well so yer not bangin yer legs on it like I do.

Re: Engine removal advice please
I had the same issue with mine. Modified the boom wouldn't recommend for the novice....

Re: Engine removal advice please
Thanks everyone for the help.
Great idea dropping the trans first, had no problem after that. Cut out both trans crossmembers in preparation for swap. That will be my next post, any one have experience with swapping in a 4.3 / 700r4? Thanks again for the help. Todd |
