'87 tank/fuel pump supplier
I've hung around reading all your great threads on fuel and electrical. I figured this weekend I'm taking the plunge into fuel system set-up. I have two questions and I hope someone can help. I've read threads where a lot of you have ran the '87 fuel tank for its direct fit into the K10 trucks and because it was the first year Chevy went to in-tank fuel pumps and EFI.
I've also read about folks utilizing a Tahoe's fuel pump assembly. Questions are as follows: 1)What supplier is the best and easiest to get the '87 tank from? Exact Part Number? I have seen some on RockAuto for the R/V series trucks, the part numbers I've found are listed below in the pic. 2) Regarding the in-tank fuel pump, whats the best route? Get the complete assembly from an early thousands Tahoe, or go with an '87 sending unit and but a Walbro 255 lph fuel pump or similar LS capable pump? Theres a pic of an '87 sending unit I found that I'm thinking I can install a good LS rated(capable) fuel pump. http://www.classicparts.com/1987-91-...tinfo/23-546/# Your help is VERY VERY appreciated!! |

Re: '87 tank/fuel pump supplier
Well here is how I did mine. It's not exactly want you have really asked for but you can do the same thing. This works great in mine.
I bought a 93 Suburban tank for TBI back several years ago, I pulled the sendor out and installed the 305 TPI pump in it. Now I plan to install the LSx pump in it. So far though the old pump is meeting the 58lbs of pressure required so it maybe awhile before I do it. I will perform this before the Power Tour for sure just for good insurance it want go out on the tour.

Re: '87 tank/fuel pump supplier
Wasn't meaning for you to use the 93 tank. Use the tank you have and just swap out the fuel pump on the sendor unit with a LSx motor pump. You may even be able to get a whole sendor to swap out out of a junkyard truck. Most GM sendors are interchangable now.
Fuel pump assemblies for the LS1 engines with dual lines. The fuel pump assembly on the right has had the fuel sending unit removed for installation in a retrofit LS1 project. Even though it is possible to use these assemblies from the GM FWD cars from 1996 up, you will need to replace the fuel pump for proper pressure and volume requirements. these can be installed in a tank with a flat top and it will require ingenuity to mount and seal. Always use a gasket (cork/rubber) for a seal and you can use small sheet metal screws to install the pump to the tank. These is also possible if you have a single line fuel pump assembly from a 2002 and later vehicle.

Re: '87 tank/fuel pump supplier
I used an 87 blazer tank and sending unit, but but just reworKed some of the wiring and ran am Aeromotive 340 pump. It dropped in, and should work like factory except with the ability to support 800 HP.

Re: '87 tank/fuel pump supplier
No. unfortunately they are the metric bubble flare type. I'll either haFta run an adapter to -6 an, weld a bung on. Or cut and flare it. Kinda undecided at this point still... probably end up going with whatever is easiest.

Re: '87 tank/fuel pump supplier
The tank is a Spectra GM15C and the sending unit is a FG12K. This is the setup for the 25 gallon tank. It is 1" shallower then the 31 gal. The sending unit is unmodified, with the exception of some upgraded wiring necessary to run the bugger pump.

Re: '87 tank/fuel pump supplier
Thank you both for the info, its all very useful!
C-S, I think I'll roll with the sending unit and pump you went with, any chance the part numbers I listed in the top pic are the correct "87" tank I need for my short bed truck? Also, that 340 pump, whats its regulated by? |

Re: '87 tank/fuel pump supplier
The 2002 trucks still had the regulator and return on the fuel rails.

Re: '87 tank/fuel pump supplier
I used a 87 Doreman tank for my 78 SWB single tank on pass. side
The sending unit for the same year 87 (matched my gauge in dash) the pump was a stock over the counter for a 2002 Camaro and has 52# pressure, I don't know what the GPH rate is but it ran the Camaros so it "better" work with this 5.3. It starts and runs but I do not have it on the street

Re: '87 tank/fuel pump supplier
Depending on which year model LSx motor you have it should have a regulator on the drivers side fuel rale.
If not you can buy the fuel filter with built in regulator and the return line hookup back to the tank.

Re: '87 tank/fuel pump supplier
LS-K
Since your truck is the short bed, you need the 16 gallon tank, part number GM11C. I purchased the Spectra Premium tank listed above in your rockauto.com list. I got a better price on Amazon.com at the time I purchased mine. Amazon.com: Spectra Premium GM11C Fuel Tank for...That tank can be mounted on either side of the truck. The sender is side specific for the '87 tank with fuel injection. I mounted ours on the driver side and used a spectra premium sending unit for an '87, part number FG05F. Spectra Premium FG05F Sending Unit for General... I used a Walbro 255 intank pump. The Aeromotive pump that Classic-Steele used might be a better choice depending on the power you are going for now or later... The regulator depends on the LS engine fuel system. If it is a return style (2 lines at the engine) it has the regulator built into the rail. If its a single line system (returnless), then in need the Corvette Filter/regulator shown above. Hope this helps.

Re: '87 tank/fuel pump supplier
Andy I read the article, now the regulator on the fuel rails, I was under the impression that the regulator on the rails is to regulate(even out) the pressure that flows to each side of the fuel rail, so that each side get the correct and same amount of fuel?

Correct. That's all your system needs. As mine it's all there is to regulate it. Mine just has the return line as did my TPI setup. Why I can't say but I'm sure some one can.
