Rarest factory paint combos

I'm stuck in the house because of the cold weather. So I started wondering which colors or color combinations are the rarest for the 60-66 trucks?

Mine is factory black and white two-tone, probably uncommon but maybe not rare?

What do you guys think? Anyone out there have any stats or opinions on this question?

Re: Rarest factory paint combos

I'm probably just putting this one in because I own it, but the 1965 only #512 Maroon seems very rare.

Re: Rarest factory paint combos

I agree on the maroon, I have never seen one in the flesh.

I think the light yellow color #518 might be a rare one as well.

Anyone have data?

Re: Rarest factory paint combos

Maroon and yellow are rare for sure. Never seen a yellow truck in person, and only one maroon. My Saddle Poly/white '66 is the only one I've seen in person, it was a '66 only color. I'd also say any truck with side trim (with white insert) that has a body color roof is pretty uncommon, vs those with a white roof.

Do you think the two tone trucks were 10% of production or less? I would think that two tone on a rare color like yellow or maroon would make it a lot more rare.

Just giving you my gut feel, I have no data.

Re: Rarest factory paint combos

My 62 was dark green with a white top. The ol girl should be put back together this spring. Im torn between painting it orange or school bus yellow, with a white top. I saw a maroon / white 64-66 along time ago. My guess would be fawn or maroon as the rarest. I know diffrent plants did diffrent things so what might be rare on the east is common in the west.

Re: Rarest factory paint combos

As far as the 1960 GMC colors go I did a lot of searching and reading before choosing the combo I have on my truck. The Olympic White with Canyon Blue was as far as I know a very seldom chosen color combo. From what I read it was considered "Too Pretty", if that makes any sense?

To support this line of reasoning, I think back to the "GMC Palomino" truck; which they only made for one year, I think?

https://www.google.com/search?q=1957...w=1440&bih=731

It was hard to use them as a work or farm truck. BUT honestly, because of lost or missing GMC records, we'll never really know for sure.

Below is a shot of my doors

Re: Rarest factory paint combos

I think that may have been the case with the yellow trucks, ( too pretty ) most were sold as working trucks, not sold as they are today...

Re: Rarest factory paint combos

Also, the color flip may have had something to do with the two tone selection. The Chevy truck generally had the color on top of the break, while GMC had the color on the bottom. I always wondered why? Canadian truck followed the color on top scheme generally.

The company I had worked for had a contract with a sheet metal company sense the fifties, I know at one time thet had 6- 63 to 66 trucks all ordered in red 514, they were still driving those trucks til the late eighties, I`m sure it was a fleet deal just as white was a fleet color...

Re: Rarest factory paint combos

most paint was ordered by the dealers. most were more than likely based on working trucks. fancy trucks were not the rule for stock at the dealership. I would imagine that most of the option trucks were customer orders and this would be where most of the different paint jobs would come into effect.

Re: Rarest factory paint combos

Every year during this era had its uncommon standard colors. Most were metallics. IMO, here are my top picks for Chevy. 196O: Metallic Gold. 1961 Tahiti Coral Metallic, 1962 and 1963 Seamist Jade Metallic, 1964 Gray Green Metallic and Copper Metallic 1965 Light Yellow and Maroon Metallic 1966 Silver Metallic and Dark Aqua Metallic. Colors that were available on all years, but are still appear to be uncommon, were gray, orange, dark green dark blue and black.

Re: Rarest factory paint combos

Is there any production number data for 1965 Suburban with the color combinations? I have a 1965 Suburban custom cab with gate that is yellow (518) & ivory (526) two-tone code is 548. Is there any way of finding out how may where produced in this color combo? From all the info I can find this color combo must be very low production on any of the C-10 trucks.

Interesting to know if anyone has numbers on this stuff. I've seen plenty maroon, light yellow, saddle, and most other colors both on the forum and in person, but can't recall seeing many in original silver.

I have always thought of the silver for my suburban body. that silver metallic that was used on the 64 GTO's. think it was called satin silver metallic.
