Re: ODBII Scan tool recommendation
I got a cheap one from China on Ebay for $10. It can read and erase codes only but it has worked for years. Cant beat it for the price

Re: ODBII Scan tool recommendation
the 2500's are good units, however snap on has quit supporting them so they will only work on up to say 2010 or so. If you are just looking to be able to look at data streams and actually have some 2 way control it would be great for havin around to use once in a while. I would get one that comes with all the cartridges and accessories tho so you arent having to either trying to piece it together or find out your missing something.

Re: ODBII Scan tool recommendation
Thanks bighaas!! I noticed that some of those 2500 units said they were good up to 2009 depending on what came with it.. I don't see my self buying anything newer than 2010 anytime soon!

Re: ODBII Scan tool recommendation
If you have an android phone, you can get an app for it called torque pro, and a little obd2 to bluetooth adapter from ebay, and you will be ready to go for under $20. It supports realtime data, including O2 sensors, fuel trim, boost/vacuum, fuel pressure, intake temp., coolant temp., and it has a 1/4 mile and 1/8 mile timer that runs off your speedo. you can set it up with different layouts, different designs, and whatever info you need at the moment. You can clear codes while you drive, and it also has a website it will send you to if you click on the code to tell you what it means. For $20 I got the equivalent of a $400+ scan tool. I am in no way affiliated to the app, I just think it is awesome. It also has a hp estimater, and a 0-60 timer. Her is the adapter: http://www.ebay.com/itm/V1-5-ELM327-...item3a8a613885
And here is the site for the app: http://torque-bhp.com/ |

Unfortunately I don't have an android phone.. That looks cool. I may hold out for one for the iPhone.

Harbor Freight has one on sale right now that reads and clears ABS codes. It is item # 60794. Regular price is $170 and it's on sale for $134.99.

Re: ODBII Scan tool recommendation
Don't be surprised if you have to get a rain check. I've got one myself and am patiently waiting for them to get more in.

Re: ODBII Scan tool recommendation
Not sure what all capabilities you are wanting but I have INNOVA brand scanner that does OBD2 and also comes with multiple plugs to do OBD1 stuff too.
I've been pleased with mine. Mine is very similar to this one... just a few years older model... Amazon.com: INNOVA 3120 Diagnostic Scan Tool/Code... |

Re: ODBII Scan tool recommendation
I,ve been using autoenginuity for quite a while now. Can trace up to 5 sensors across the screen at the same time. A little pricey up front with the full deluxe american diagnostics including about anything possible. Updates are reasonable, don't spank you for missing a year here and there like snap-on ( i really like snap-on otherwise, toolbox full of their products). My only issue is initial getting communication squared away and working. I've come close to putting a screwdriver through the screen more than once. I know if i did it more often it wouldn't feel like the maiden voyage every time.
If i'm chasing drivability issues i set up the 5 sensor trace screen with rpm on top and then anything else i want to trace below it. |

Re: ODBII Scan tool recommendation
Got my coupon book in the mail from Harbor Freight yesterday, the scanner that was $109.99 last month is listed in there for $88 and some change. I'm going to get them to credit me the difference back.
