So i finally got to get started on my crew cab this past weekend. Stage 1.pull the 454 from my old dually and drop it in the quad cab. (Much better for my growing family.) Stage 2 will probably be start looking into a 4x4 swap or maybe paint. Still up in the air about the 4x4 part. Here are some pictures of stage 1.

My cousin who is the mastermind behind these engines.
As you can see ive got a lot of cleaning to do before dropping it in the other truck. We will be pulling the heads this weekend and replacing gaskets. Possibly going to put aluminum heads on it. I dont know though. He offered them to me for $300. Hopefully the engine swap will be done by the end of the month.

Looks like a great start to your project. I think you should go for the 4X4 swap. I like your "mastermind cuz" ball cap. Did you consider a diesel swap?

I have contemplated a diesel swap in the future. As of right now im just dropping the 454 in to get the quad cab on the road. I have really thought of later doing either a 6bt or 4bt. Maybe even an 8.1 vortec. We shall see what happens.

Didnt get too much done this weekend as my cousin was out of town. Did what I could with the little time I had. Started scraping off all the old oil and grease, then took the valve covers off. I tried to pull the intake manifold but it was stuck on there pretty good. Im sure my cousing has a trick to getting it off so ill wait. Also took some more photos of the quad. I did find out it has both cruise control and a manual throttle setup!

The nice thing is theres hardly any rust! A little on the bottom of the driver side doors and thats pretty much it. The undercarriage is rust free!! Gotta love AZ vehicles!

Got a phone call saying the quad cab engine was already pulled yesterday. I guess thats one less step to worry about! I was hoping to do some of that work myself...

So we got a little work done this weekend. Tore the motor down to bare block. Found out the #7 cylinder has a little rust near the top. Plans as of right now are to hone the cylinders and send the crank out to get the journals turned. Everything looked fine for a very used engine. Last rebuild was in the late 90's and its been pulling trailers all its life. As of now I'm looking for piston rings, new bearings, a flex plate and a full gasket kit. Should i go ahead and paint it before i put it back together? Im not too concerned with it but hell if its out...... I also need to see if this was the original engine for the dually.... i have a feeling the person who rebuilt it swapped the 4 bolt for the current 2 bolt main. Research time! Here are the few photos i took yesterday. Ill try and take more when i pick the parts up for cleaning.

Update over the weekend. Got the block completely cleaned and honed. After that was complete we taped eveything off and painted. We will probably do a little touchup paint after we get the heads bolted on. The crankshaft is being polished at the moment for only $30! Now im working on ordering all the parts needed to put it back together. Gasket set, piston rings, bearings and new pushrods.

This weekend update! Got all my parts in to complete the rebuild with the exception of the crankshaft. That should be in Wednesday. So this weekend we checked the piston ring clearances, installed the rod and main bearings, then pulled the old springs off of the heads. I did find this information out to get an idea of the power she should build.

-Flat-top Pistons are bored .20 over.
-Will be running an Edelbrock idle-5500 performer intake mani.
-Heads are oval port. Semi-open chamber
-Valves are stainless oversized 2.19 Intake and 1.88 Exhaust
-RV cam hyrdraulic roller flat tappet Not sure on specs.
-Headman longtube headers
-Still working on carb... Thinking of rebuilding the quadjet carb
-Comp 3/8" pushrods

Hoping to see around 400hp and hopefully close to 500lb.ft. torque. ???

All of this will be running through a TH400 and im pretty sure a 3:73 rear gear.
This is all I can think of off the top of my head. If my information is incorrect feel free and mention it as i am in the learning process. This weekend i will be starting my vacation and will be in Ohio for a couple weeks. My cousin said he would probably do some work on the truck while I'm gone to make progress. We shall see!

Got the casting numbers from the new heads
3917215 Yrs 67-69 Closed chamber 100.9CC

Also, Ive got a chance to throw in some 02' F250 seats. 40/20/40 front bench and full rear bench.... any thoughts? I would like to put in different seats but am not 100% fond of using ford seats. Any experience with those ones? I would most likely put a really nice seat cover on it to make it perfect.

So we got back from Ohio recently and here are the updates.

All that's left for the engine is the intake manifold, valve covers and the carb to be bolted on. Once that's complete we will put it on the test stand for its first run. I am currently in between looking for a new carb or possibly rebuilding the Q-Jet. I would prefer to rebuild but was advised to buy a new carb. Here are the photos from the last run of work.

What a weekend.... Got the engine on the test stand and got it running using the carb from my cousins car. Fired it up and it sounded great! All was well until we noticed a plug wire melting on the header as well as the starter wires were melting just from the heat. Not even close to the header. After correcting those issues, we fired it up again. This time the return line on the fuel pump started leaking. Fixed it, then started it again. Then the radiator hose blew off. Other than all this the engine seemed to be just fine! We got it timed, and let it run after all the issues were corrected. When we felt like it was time to put everything away we decided to take a look at the valve clearance because of some popping we heard. The oil sitting on the heads had all kinds of metal flakes! SOAB! Pretty sure the flat tappet cam took a crap on us. We will be tearing back in to it to find out. Now i need to find a way to come up with about another 1K to build it YET AGAIN! Any ideas? I will most likely sell off some leftovers from the build to get started. IE heads, intake mani, exhaust mani, rochester q-jet and the propane system. I like that fuel Filter. Does that bolt to the head or is that just where its sitting?

My cousin is really particular about how things look in the engine bay so he made a bracket that bolts on to the head where you see it. The bracket was made so it cant rotate out of place or move around at all too. Pretty nifty if you ask me! BUT thats just what he has on his setup. We only used it temporarily for the test run. I might do the same for mine though.

So it turns out that the camshaft somehow shifted back and chewed into the block. Now ive got a huge paperweight. Great. I dont have much time left before i move so what should i do? Should i push and scrounge to get a 454 in it possibly buying a used running one just to get it on the road? Or should i just put it on the backburner and save up some cash for a while; maybe throw a 4bt in it once i get enough to fund it? The only stipulation is if i end up holding off, the truck will probably have to stay here in Tucson until i can get the time to move it to colorado. Either that or i can try and sell it or maybe try and get my money back from my cousin. Hmmm....
