Safelite windshield
Anybody used em for our trucks? Just went in for an equote today....$460 installed with new rubber, no chrome strip in the rubber.
So, 179 for an LMC windshield and nigh onto $300ish for freight and I figger its a wash and I don't have to be the one cussin if the windshield cracks/brakes on the install. Got a stone chip that's startin to travel in the original glass now so I know its only a matter of time..... Any experiences? |

Re: Safelite windshield
Its sooo much easier than you think to install a windshield! You do struggle a little but its one of those rewarding jobs. I actually can't wait until I get to do another one. I have to replace the gasket on my back window...hmm.

Re: Safelite windshield
If you can't do it yourself, beware- most glass companies will charge the same amount to install your glass, and if it breaks, you own both pieces.
I just had a tinted/shaded one installed- mentioned in another thread about the same thing, for $214 with gasket at my shop. I'd suggest shopping around for an independent glass installer, you might get a better deal. |

Re: Safelite windshield
No it was Grizzly Glass Centers. Joe from Cinderella Customs called them for me and got the quote. You should take a look at the new 66 panel he is building. Very nice!

Re: Safelite windshield
Safelite did mine last year after I took a rock to the windshield. I don't know the retail cost as my insurance covered it. Took 2 guys about an hour to do and it came out great. They even used Precision gaskets, which I was happy about.

Re: Safelite windshield
I paid less than $100 for mine, got it from Technaglass. New seal from Classic Parts and installed it myself.....

Re: Safelite windshield
My uncle, as a Christmas present, had a local windshield guy come out to his home garage (Augusta, GA) and install a new tinted windshield with the standard black seal into my 64 C10. It's beautiful and leak-free. He paid $180. This was just this past January.

Re: Safelite windshield
I own a glass company. Have been installing these since the trucks were new. Probably have installed over 500 of them over the last 50 years and sold probably 1500 all together.
Takes me about 30 minutes start to finish and I prefer to not use a new Gasket. (I charge more to use new rubber) Back window is a 10 minute job. I used to buy these windshields by the case and kept them in stock as we did at least 2 a month and as many as 3 a week back in the 70's NAGS quotes this as a "1.5" meaning 1.5 hours book so we usually quoted 1/2 NAGS to our customers. and that worked out just fine. Secret to all these old rubber set shields was to clean the rubber and use lindsead oil as the setting lubricant. It dries and becomes the actual seal. This was the factory technique dating back before WW2. Funny story about these shields. We had a customer install his own new shield and he used WD 40 as his lube. Must have used a quart of it. anyway he got about 3/4 of the way done and gave up. called us and asked if we could finish the job. I told him to drive it in and he did,...sort of.. he jumped in his truck and on the way to my shop he jumped hard on the brakes for some reason and his 3/4 installed windshield uninstalled itself and landed on the street in front of his truck and he promptly ran over it. Some times being cheap can be expensive. |

Re: Safelite windshield
If you have a local shop that specializes in auto glass, I'd give them a call & ask for a quote. $460 sounds a lil expensive to me. I just had the windshield replaced in a '90 1500, it was $205 & they came to the house. Satellite had a much higher quote of $360 or $380 to do the same job.

Re: Safelite windshield
I think its high too. But I did find windshields to go has a pick up point in Raleigh which is close. $139 and 1/2 tank gas for the 100 mile round trip.... That and a local fella to curse it into the new gasket and I might get outta dodge for $300ish. But we'll see, I actually have full coverage on the truck with USAA so I can let em pay for it for me!

Re: Safelite windshield
I got my '62 (curved glass) from a place in Tulsa that came to my house, with windshield and installed it for about 250. There are a bunch of independent glass places around, I'd shop for price if I was you.

Re: Safelite windshield
I've had them installed, and done them myself. My highest priority has always been to insist upon a "Pilkington" windshield. To my knowledge they are the highest quality on the market, and the same thickness as the original glass. Some of the import glass is very thin and doesn't fill up the cavity in the gasket very well.
