Smile Daughter just bought 62 fleet side long bed

Hi , let me introduce myself , I'm River, my 24 yo daughter just bought a 63 chevy long bed , fleet side with a 235 straight six , 3 on tree already converted to a floor shift , to pull her 52 vintage canned ham trailer , needless to say this has become pops project , it needs plenty of work but the drive train is in good working order ,I just finished replacing hood lights & wire loom , tail lights and wire loom , from what I see this truck has about 5 or 6 different wire Looms , plan eventually replace them all . Installed new door locks , there was no speedometer cable which brings me to my ? (First of many I'm sure) I can't seem to find where on the tranny the speedometer cable connects too . And input be greatly appreciated , thanks

It may be obscured by the shifter (and/or caked on grime). Should be on the left ("driver") side of the tailshaft housing.

Welcome River and Daughter! Its cool that yer daughter has an interest in these! Speedometer cable should connect on the drivers side of the tranny. On mine I believe its somewheres up top on the corner...haven't look under there fer awhile.

Re: Daughter just bought 62 fleet side long bed

I must be missing something I see a hole with a bolt a and what looks like a piece of metal latch to hold something in , maybe something the speedometer cable screws into , at any rate there's nothing protruding to connect it too!

best bet is to become a supporting member and put up a WTB and make sure of the trans you have so you can say "i need this..."

Re: Daughter just bought 62 fleet side long bed

these are common trans and not a whole of guys running them, proly yanked them in favor of an auto trans and the 3 speed is on the scrap pile. thats where mine went

Re: Daughter just bought 62 fleet side long bed

Like rideblue said they were pretty common in these trucks. The good news is as soon as kids get these old trucks they rip out the factory trans and bolt up a th350 or 400 so they'll practically give you one of these old, very easily rebuilt trannys complete. One near here went for $50.00 a couple of months ago.
Try a junkyard and you'll hit pay dirt. They were used from the 50's through 62 IIRC.

Sidenote: Congrats on having a father daughter project! Girls are tough to interest in projects, but if you get lucky like that eat it up! I'm in the same boat with mine. The teenager wants to re-build a beetle now, the 9yr old wants my truck

I was like that with my oldest for the longest time. They can change their minds in an instant. You might try not talking a single word about it for a season (3 months) then ask her to help you with something easy like sanding. Give her gloves to protect her nails and no music playing so you guys can talk a little. Might work!

Welcome to the forum

To post more than 1 pic at a time, just keep uploading them. You just have to upload 1 at a time to a max of 5 I believe. Then close the window and click on 'Submit Reply'

Re: Daughter just bought 62 fleet side long bed

You can post 10000000000 pics if you upload them somewhere else. Just go to tinypic.com, windypix.com, imageshack.com, etc. and upload your pictures. As you upload them you'll see a link to them usually on the bottom or on the right. It looks like this:

Code:
[img]http://www.WEBSITE.com/YOURPIC.jpg[/img ]
Just put that code in your reply. And the neat thing is when you do it like that you can type around your pic to add comments like this

Hey bob, did you catch the game?

No, not that game, the football game:

That's not football you idiot, that's soccer. Only 9 yr old girls play soccer!
This game!

Yeah, that's the ticket!
