look what i scored this weekend!!!!!

Well check out what i scored this weekend. Its a 64, no motor or trans. My wife has been wanting one of these for a long time, she is actually the one that found it. So her bday is in june so i told her that was her present and went and bought iy. i only have the one photo as of now but we will be getting a whole photo shoot soon. got to clean it out as the p/o used it to hold junk. so right now just gonna ask a few question to get going in right direction

1st- as i said no motor or trans. P/o said when he got it it had already been converted to auto in floor. now this is going to be a driver for my wife, not a hotrod, so want it to run good and be decent on gas. so the question is which of these two combos would you go with and tell me your reason for your prefernce. 305/700r4 or 350/700r4?

2nd- it has a few minor issues with rust so i need to now on the front fender are all 60-66 interchangable? Are the core supports where radiator is interchangable? And finally could i use a fleet side bed as donor for lower portions in front of and behide rear wheel well. and the well lip if ness.

Re: look what i scored this weekend!!!!!

Congrats on the cool find. 60-66 fenders and radiator core supports interchange. Short fleetside beds have the same wheel openings and lip profiles. But those beds are shorter overall than the back of your panel - you could use a bed for sheet metal to patch in, but you won't be able to make just one patch behind the wheel all the way to the bumper.

Re: look what i scored this weekend!!!!!

Those trucks are a little heavy so I think the 350 would be a better choice.

Re: look what i scored this weekend!!!!!

I would go with a 5.3/4l60e/ 3.42:1 but I am biased too!

all front sheetmetal is interchangeable on 60-66 except the core support on the 60-62 and 63-66 is different because of the frame being a bit wider on 60-62.

yes you can use either a short/long bed panel or patch panels for the same.

Looks like a nice prize for her, good luck!

Re: look what i scored this weekend!!!!!

Cool find! A 350/700 r4 combo pending on rear gear and tire size will get you between 8-15 mpg. If you want more old style..get a 70's 350 and fuel inject it..add the 700r4 and a 3.42.1 rear gear with 28-30 inch tires and at highway or free way speeds it should get you pretty fair mileage..I'd say no more then 16. But you could go with a LS 5.3 and get better mileage as well.

Nice panel
if I was to do it I would get a astro/safari running gear
97-02 EFI 4.3 4l60e AWD or 2 wheel
around here they are plentyfull and inexpensive
2wheel I got 22mpg ..AWD 19mpg

Re: look what i scored this weekend!!!!!

Nice score on the panel

I would go with a 5.3/4L60E for nice daily driver that should get decent MPG's.

Re: look what i scored this weekend!!!!!

There is a 62 by me that has a very very cool patina and it's running gear altho I don't believe it runs couple grand is all they want and I haven't made myself do it yet but I really really would like to make it my light-work truck...
I think it was a great idea anyway and she'll really enjoy the whole process prolly, congrats man, you got yourself a keeper!

Re: look what i scored this weekend!!!!!

Thanks to all that have replied so far. it seems so far that everyone would prefer a 5.3/4L60e but what all is envolved with that since it is electronic? Dont really want a bunch of senors and computers since i would think that would make it where i cant work on it would have to have someone else do it. And im taking it that no one thinks a 305/700r4 would do any good?

Re: look what i scored this weekend!!!!!

If you're comparing a stock 305 to a stock 350, the 350 is likely going to give you as good if not better MPG's and more power.

The late model LSx engine are a far better design, will easily last 250,000 miles, make more power, and give better MPG's. These engines are so popular these days and there is so much aftermarket support, they are practically plug and play. The EFI engines are really not that difficult to work on once you understand how they work.

A buddy of mine recommended useing a 90s model vortec 350 and changing intake to carb. he said him and his dad used one in his old truck and it did great lost of power and decent mpg. said those where roller motors and that is why they did so good. i really want to stay away from electronics and computers.

Re: look what i scored this weekend!!!!!

Not to bad at all, I got lucky and got mine for a $1000! But it looked like this! Oh and it had a dog living in it to! I started to build a daily driver but ended up going the hot rod, custom rout but I had bought a 89 burb as a donor I used wiring, column, front sway bar, seats, tbi 350 and 700r4! it all practically feel right in with (to me, little modification)! So my opinion that is the best and cheapest way to go! I will post some pic's later to give you an idea!

Well that looks great! exactlly what all did u have to use ( wiring, ecm ), how did u know what all wires to take out with it? In that year is thewiring all tied into every thing like these more modern computers? What about fuel tank and pump did u have to use elec pump and pressurized tank or still mech pump? If u had to switch how u make orignal fuel gauge work? These are all the things that confuse me about going to computer motor

I used the same wiring harness, the tbi is obd1 which really don't get any easier, ford makes an inline fuel pump that has correct pressure and its inline so you can use your tank and sending unit you just need to add a return line and I just used a 5/16 steel brake line punched a hole in top of tank and scuff clean and weld (I had taken my tank to the local radiator place and had it hot tanked before I welded but you can J/B weld it to.), I just did a lot of research and if you do, do it when your done you see how easy it is! and on the wiring I had a shop manual on the burb, it had wiring diagram.

Re: look what i scored this weekend!!!!!

I had an 89 chevy suburban with a 350 tbi and 700R4 and got as good as 20 on the highway. Around town I would get around 15 mpg.
