Hedman headers 29230 fittment question
Hey guys,
I believe I might have made a mistake recently . I ordered a set of headers for my truck. I have 64 long bed step side that I am swapping in a 283 and 700r4 in place of the 230i6 and 3spd. I ordered the hedman 69230 headers. I know now that I should have ordered the 69260 model. Had anyone tried to install the 69230 ? What issues will I run into? Think I can make it work? Re: Hedman headers 29230 fittment question
Why not just send them back and get the 69260's? Did you get them from Jegs or Summit? Both will exchange with no issues.

Re: Hedman headers 29230 fittment question
I haven't tried the 69230's yet, but I would think they should work with an auto trans. They definitely will not work with the bellhousing crossmember in place. The 69260's are made specifically for the '60-'66 trucks, but they do hang down lower than the 69230's.

Re: Hedman headers 29230 fittment question
Thanks for the feedback guys. I think I am going to just return them and get the 69260's to be safe. Hey CaptainFab, will I still have to remove the bellhousing cross member anyway with the 700r4?
Thanks in advance |

Re: Hedman headers 29230 fittment question
if you have later model control arms the headers for the 64 year model will not work.

Re: Hedman headers 29230 fittment question
You won't have to remove the bellhousing crossmember but it will have to be notched because it hits the front of the trans oil pan. I would just remove it if you can. Its kinda difficult with the cab on but people have done it. What are you going to use for a trans crossmember?
In this photo you can see the notch. Previous owner did on mine instead of removing. They also used the ebrake crossmeber to mount the 700r4 and eliminated all the ebrake stuff. I will be removing it once I get the cab off. Bret

I like the idea of cleaning that up, removing the cross member entirely and moving the e-brake to another location.. what are my options for relocation?

Re: Hedman headers 29230 fittment question
I'm still researching the e brake as I currently don't have one but from I've read the easiest solution is using a 66 ebrake setup, but you have to find all the parts at the salvage yard as all you can buy new are the cables themselves. Maybe someone will chime in that has already done this.

Re: Hedman headers 29230 fittment question
I would just remove that bellhousing crossmember entirely. These trucks that came from the factory with auto trans did not have them. It is just in the way and serves no purpose. For a trans crossmember a factory auto trans crossmember from a '63-'87 truck will work just fine. All you have to do is drill the mounting holes. The '66-'72's have the same style e-brake cables, hooks and related parts. If you are lucky enough to find a '63-'65 auto trans crossmember, that will solve 2 issues at once.
