Calling all Base Model/ "Plain Jane" Truck Owners
I know there's lots of guys out there that like the top of the line, Silverado's and Sierra Classics, but I want to hear from the owners like me that prefer their trucks to be basic and simple, with few options. The Custom Deluxe and Sierra owners.
Let's see your base model trucks!

Re: Calling all Base Model/ "Plain Jane" Truck Owners
Very nice! Mine is pretty plain. I'll post a picture or two later.
It has no A/C, no cruise, no tilt. Really all it's got is a burgundy interior, and gauges instead of idiot lights. From the factory, it had a 305 V-8, but I'm going to pull it soon, and replace with a 350 out of a 1972. The transmission from the factory is a 4-speed Muncie.

1982 C10 Custom Deluxe with 250 six and 3-on-the-tree. No options at all, unless power steering was an option. Rally wheels were added by some previous owner. Paint seems to be original.

87 GMC Sierra 4.3 tbi/700R4. It has AC and power steering...nothing else. No dome light, cigarette lighter, or radio. It has a nice radio delete plate that will soon be removed.

Re: Calling all Base Model/ "Plain Jane" Truck Owners
My C/10 when I got it, and as it presently looks. No cigarette lighter, no dome light, no headliner, no vents in the dash, no carpet or mat, manual steering, vinyl seat. 250 three on the tree...
Now it has power steering, a rubber floor , a cloth seat out of a '94 and a 5 speed from an '83 Camaro Z/28 Last edited by lilpoindexter; 04-06-2014 at 12:47 AM. |

Re: Calling all Base Model/ "Plain Jane" Truck Owners
Here's mine:
1984 C-20, with a 305 and 4-speed original. The 305 is soon to be replaced with a 350. Per the SPID, it has painted BE mirrors, painted rear step bumper, power steering, power brakes, gauges, and burgundy interior. I'm in the process of a mild restoration, and these pictures were taken just after my grandpa gave it to me (for free!) last fall.

Believe or not, when my other cars are out of commission I use this truck as a driver...My daily commute is 60 miles +, so with only a 12 gallon tank, and maybe 20 mpg on the freeway, I don't use it as often as when gas was cheaper. |

Holy Geez lilpoindexter, I had to check my garage to make sure my C10 custom deluxe was still in there. I have a '78 stepside, 250 I6. Originally it was a 3 on the tree but it was swapped for an auto TH350 some odd years ago by my dad. I could never figure out why. Here's my no A/C plain jane C10 with a slightly newish CD player and that's about all for options. Oh has front disc brakes and PS, but crank windows, no headliner, no dome.

Re: Calling all Base Model/ "Plain Jane" Truck Owners
How did you handle the steering column after the 5-speed conversion? Specifically, I mean requiring the column shifter to be in reverse before the key can be removed and the column locked. And I assume you have a backup light switch mounted to the trans itself?

Re: Calling all Base Model/ "Plain Jane" Truck Owners
This is my 87 Custom Deluxe. Has a/c and power steering and a cloth seat. Has all the trim codes for the side trim and mirrors but I think the ralley wheels were added at the dealership. (I have the original sales right up from the dealer and it says $225.00 for ralley wheels) There is a code for interior trim cloth Medici red so I think it had the cloth seat from the factory. No headliner, radio delete, manual windows, manual locks, no cruise or tilt. Going to do away with the TTIIS and put the ralley wheels back on, this is how I bought it but got the original wheels too.

I ran the two wires for the reverse light to the switch on the T5 to get functional reverse lights. I jumped the neutral start switch, so the truck will start in gear if you don't depress the clutch. |

I used a separate toggle switch for backup lamps; that way I could use them for hooking up the trailer in the dark, too. K

Re: Calling all Base Model/ "Plain Jane" Truck Owners
I know right! He also gave me a 1972 for free. He told me to get those trucks off his property. So I parted the 72, and I'm going to use the motor.
This truck was purchased new by one of my grandpa's good friends, and then he sold it to my grandpa in 1993. I'm the third owner, but I know every previous owner. Until last fall, the truck lived on Vashon Island (located in the Seattle area).

Re: Calling all Base Model/ "Plain Jane" Truck Owners
My dad bought my grandpa either an 89 or 91 C30 C&C that came with a FI 454 and 400 trans. He went old school on the truck and ripped everything out. This truck only had 65000 miles on it. He put in a GM crate carbed 350 and 465 trans. Put in a 70's model steering column and actually mounted the old high beam switch on the floor again. He didn't want anything to do with any of the newer fuel injection stuff. I think he was crazy for doing it. I ended up buying the engine and trans. To each his own I guess.

Re: Calling all Base Model/ "Plain Jane" Truck Owners
I relate more to the base level crowd than I do the uplevel guys;
We always ordered a Scottsdale trim level so that we could get manual windows and locks and the full vinyl flooring (and because they're cheaper!). I opted for the uplevel grill (and added Air Conditioning to the order when I learned I was getting transferred to Arizona). Rally wheels and B85 chrome side moldings complete the deception. K
