Clutch might have gone south of the border, truck shudders when shifting.
Alright, driving home last night the truck decides to take longer to gain speed as I'm going through my gears. It seems to want to shudder between 2nd, 3rd and 4th while shifting and take a slower time to gain my speed. I have an sm420 backed up to a 292 I6. Thinking either the throw out bearing is going out, pressure plate is acting up or old age is finally taking its toll on the old girl. Any suggestions on what is causing the problem? Much obliged for advice fellas.

Double check the Z bar and make sure it is not backing out of the mount. Had that happen once. When it did, the Z bar wasn't throwing the linkage enough to full disengage the clutch.
I have also this shudder problem and it was the clutch and pressure plate going bad. Resurfaced the flywheel, new clutch and pressure plate and all was good again. Good luck.

By Z bar you mean the clutch linkage at the bell housing and on the frame correct? Also a slight squealing sound is present while driving so I'm also thinking throw out bearing is done 9 9 it's way out the door.

Re: Clutch might have gone south of the border, truck shudders when shifting.
Sounds odd. Shudders when you push the clutch in or when you let it out?
Does the squeal get louder with the clutch pushed in? When adjusted correctly the throwout bearing shouldn't touch the pressure plate and spin when the clutch is let out. Not sure why the acceleration would be sluggish. The clutch isn't slipping or something, is it? |

Hard to say and no it shudders when I let out like I'm jockeying the clutch. Seal is small but noticeable and increases in pitch when I accelerate.

Re: Clutch might have gone south of the border, truck shudders when shifting.
Huh. Sounds like something is certainly not happy! Like Richard said, an oily/greasy clutch will also chatter, but if it didn't do it when using the clutch before I wouldn't think that would be it.
If it was the throwout bearing squealing I'd really think it would get louder or at least the sound would change when you pushed the clutch in, though. Like I said, it shouldn't even be spinning at all with the clutch all the way out. (I adjust for something like an inch of pedal travel before it touches the pressure plate, which IIRC is what GM recommended.) |

Yeah it does have some slop in the linkage so I'm gonna try to adjust it and hopefully get some where from there. If that doesn't fix it then I might as well replace the clutch. Probably the same one from the production of the truck. Lol.

Re: Clutch might have gone south of the border, truck shudders when shifting.
The clutch is probably done, and from your description I'd say you might have also incurred some other damage as a result. The linkage is actually supposed to have some free play so you don't burn up the throwout bearing, so a little more slop isn't an issue. Unless the problem is just the clutch dragging/not disengaging all the way that's not the problem.
To check the linkage adjustment, just see how much you have to push the clutch pedal in before you feel the throwout bearing hit the pressure plate. You should feel an inch or so where only the clutch pedal return spring is holding the pedal up, then everything should go much more "solid" when it touches the pressure plate. If it doesn't work like it should when adjusted like that something is broken somewhere. |

And so begins the long process of disassembling and such. Yes I'm on my 2nd drink. It's fighting me so some liquid encouragement is needed to keep the push on. Lol.

Re: Clutch might have gone south of the border, truck shudders when shifting.
Just make sure the liquid encouragement doesn't lead to the production of "extra" parts!
Why are you taking all that stuff out, though? I just pulled my SM420 out a couple times swapping stuff around. One time I lifted it up from the floor tunnel opening using a chain attached with a couple top cover bolts and set it in the cab using an engine hoist, and another time I did the same thing, but just set it down onto the ground with the hoist. Seems like a lot of extra work to pull both the engine and trans out. |

Yes it does seem like a lot of extra work but I need to inspect the truck more thoroughly because this is a major overhaul since 64. This truck hasn't been really touched at all so I might as well be the guy to do it. Lol.

Certainly not a bad idea. Are you going to replace the seals and all that while you're at it?

Contemplating it. If I had the cash I'd give this thing a full rebuild. I do need a new exhaust manifold because mines on it's last leg. Also gonna clean the block up too, seen some original Detroit Diesel Green towards the bell housing under the years of grime. Lol

Don't forget to change the rear seal while you have the trans off. Gonna look nice to freshen it up like that.

Engine is out and the culprit is the clutch. Here's today's work for the truck.

So So pulled the tin off the block late last night minus the timing chain cover because I didn't have a harmonic balancer puller. Sending them in today to be hot tanked and cleaned up and picking up the gaskets and seals today after work. Here's some more pics of it torn down.
