Valve spring replacement
Hello all,
My stock valve springs on my 250 6 cyl are old and tired and are in need of replacing. What size spring should I look for to replace the stock springs and where is the best place to purchase them? Thanks in advance! |

Re: Valve spring replacement
Did you check them with a tool or are you just assuming they are bad?

Re: Valve spring replacement
I recently had a new distributor (HEI) and carb (Weber 32/36) installed trying to fix a low rpm power problem. When installing then I had the valves checked and they were weak. You could push them down easily.

Re: Valve spring replacement
I don't think you'll find choices in spring sizes and you may not find many options in type and quality like you will for SBC. Are you doing complete head work; valves, guides, etc.? Is this a performance build? New springs are a good idea in general for an engine with years/miles but I wouldn't do springs alone.

Re: Valve spring replacement
The easiest place to get them might be a Chevy dealer but try NAPA first, as they carry lots of older/obscure parts. Good luck.

Re: Valve spring replacement
Try Northern Auto Parts (or even Rockauto) for new ones--nothing obscure about them, and they shouldn't be very much money at all.
But weak springs won't be the cause of a lack of power at lower speeds, and factory springs are pretty weak to begin with (heavy springs are not needed). Nothing wrong with swapping some new ones in, but I don't think that it will solve your problem. |

I posted this in the engine and trans section this morning under 250 6cyl power issues.
