Re: coolant temp sensor
I used the spacer in the back of the passenger side head for my gauge.

Re: coolant temp sensor
Where did you put the one for your fans then?
I have my fans on the back of the passenger head, the ECM on the front of the drivers head, and then my guage we were going to weld a bung into the water pump but we haven't done anything yet. For right now I'm just using a bluetooth OBD2 scanner with my phone to keep an eye on it.

Re: coolant temp sensor
What gauge are you running? That will be a factor in what sender you use.

Re: coolant temp sensor
The fans are controlled by the ECU which feeds off the sendor in the drivers side head.

Re: coolant temp sensor
Call me a chicken, but i didn't have enough balls to drill and tap the head to a 1/2" NPT. So i drilled and tapped the water pump.

Re: coolant temp sensor
Autometer makes everything you need, if you search my username there's a thread I posted in that contains all of the part #'s you need to use their adapter and sender with the stock 67-72 gauges.
I have one in my truck and the gauge is nice and linear in it's action and about vertical at 210* which is exactly where it should be with these motors. |

Re: coolant temp sensor
The PO stripped the hole in the front of the drivers head, so I drilled and tapped it to 1/2" NPT and put the stock 5.3 sensor in the rear of the passenger side. It was pretty easy. I put grease on the bit and tap to keep the bits of aluminum out of the head.

Re: coolant temp sensor
I did the same as Andy. Drivers side is for PCM which controls fans, pass side is for gauge. I actually get a different reading between the two. It's been as much as 20 degrees at some times.

Re: coolant temp sensor
I also have the scan gauge 2 in the truck so I have 3 readings and yes the passenger side is always higher than the computer readings about 18 degree most of the time.

Re: coolant temp sensor
Yup that's^ the same thing I did. And good to know I'm not the only one with temp variation between the two. I'm not worried since my e-fans run off the pcm anyway so when I check my gauge I just look at it and subtract about 15 degrees in my head. I haven't had any overheating problems since the new rad anyway though.

Re: coolant temp sensor
Took the stock temp sensor from my 91 350 had it milled down to fit the passenger head, plugged right in, voila.

Re: coolant temp sensor
Good info!
What 1/8 npt auto meter / vdo sender works with our 67-72 gauges though. With the Autometer. 2277? Thanks! Should help the OP as well.

Re: coolant temp sensor
Does any of the late model cars/trucks use an idiot light. I am installing a lc9 in my 70 swb and just want to get a switch to make idiot light work. The right head is plugged on the back with a m12x1.5 bolt and washer.
Thanks |

Re: coolant temp sensor
Wouldn't the adapter keep the sensor/switch from going into the coolant?
