trans question
Will a 700r4 that was connected to a 4.3 bolt up to a 283 small block? will this trans handle the power of a stock 283?

Hi Mike;
I have a 700r4 hooked up to a 4.3 in my 95 chevy pu. It had a 5sp in before. I know that the bolt pattern on the block n trans are the same. The 700r4 should do good behind the 283,unless you have beefed up the 283. You will have to make or bye a NEW drive line as the 700r4 about 4" longer then reg trans. T-P Auto Tim |

You might consider doing thorough inspection of the trans and installing a thicker shift plate and hd clutches, just to be sure - and check the speedometer drive, some are mechanical and the others are electric.
I put a 700r4 behind a '99 350, the '51 should be a few 100 lbs lighter that the trucks they came out of. |

Just for long term reliability. I have heard of complaints on the 700r4 getting weak at 60,000 +/- miles, and I plan on driving mine farther too. I'd just rather fix it the first time.....just sharing the idea. |

I've had problems with EVERY 700R4 that I've owned. They have a design flaw with the valve body system that will turn the insides of your trans to silly putty it the T.V. cable is even a milimeter out of adjustment. However, theye are beefy, have a very low first gear, and a decent overdrive. They were the stock transmissions behind every IROC camaro and most C-4 Corvettes, so yes, they will work with a 283, and will definetly handle the torque just fine.
Here is a link to a valve body upgrade that will make your trans last, especially if you use a cobbled together T.V. cable & bracket that you wouldn't normally be able to properly adjust. I don't see a fairly stock 283 having enough more power than a 4.3 and it may not have as much hp or torque than some 4.3 engines, to get worried 700-R4 about.
The thing on a 700-R4 is and always has been the TV cable adjustment. It has to be perfect or else you have problems as Oneoffstroker mentioned in post #9. They just are not a forgiving trans if you get that adjustment off even the least bit.
