Fixing to purchase an 86 c20
My grand dad purchased a 86 c20 with a utility bed at a school auction in Dallas. It look really good. What should I look at tho. Where are the common rust spots, what mileage will it get with a 350 4 speed Manuel. He said he did not know if the utility bed was origional but thinks it is. Was it an option? I love the looks of a 74 grill. Will it fit on an 86? New to the 80 model trucks. It Jill be a WORK truck. Wil I'd do good? will put picks up of I get it next weekend.

Re: Fixing to purchase an 86 c20
I have had 3 C20 square bodies. For $500, you likely have enough in parts to cover the vehicle cost if it turns out to be a lemon.
You probably already know this, but if you want this to be a reliable driver, you can expect to replace all of the wear parts on the truck, unless they have recently been replaced (tires, brakes, front suspension, shocks, alternator, starter, etc., and don't forget the air conditioning parts, if it has a/c). Bring a small tarp to crawl under the truck with a flashlight to check it out. If it looks rusty I would walk away. Check around the cab rear corners and in the outer corners of the cab floor. Check the gas tank brackets to see how rusty they are on top of the brackets (hidden) where the brackets support the tank. While you are on the ground, check the bottom of the doors and the rocker panels for rust. Good luck. |

'74 grille will not fit '81 and up, unless you want to change the whole front end over (fenders, hood, rad support, etc). Check out my build thread, linked below (Intro from an old Assembly guy) to see the restoration on my truck, for typical rust spot and repair. K
