Do you mean the steering box is in the way ? If so, fab a bracket to move the box out about 2". Then use block hugger headers or ram horn exhaust manifolds.
Or do like Coach529 on this forum did - offset the motor to the right a bit
Axle clearance isn't a problem if the motor is positioned correctly

Re: Want to put small block in 52 chevy with strait dropped axel

The column ends up at an angle, guys have done it for years, not perfect but oh well. You can move it over a little too. Now, the recess in the dash for the column is over to the right and not in the center of the gauges. So you could put that recess perfectly in the middle of the gauges and move the box out and wham, you have actually made it look BETTER inside.

I moved the box out on a swap once by chopping a piece of a junk frame I had off where the box mounted and welding it to the side of the frame. Worked great, it was the perfect amount to go out, and it had the holes in it for the box, and it was free, perfect.

Re: Want to put small block in 52 chevy with strait dropped axel

I moved my motor off center 2" and moved my steering box over.

There is not a lot of room.

Ram horns take up less room than the headers I used.

To put a 283 into my '53 I used the 55-56 log style exhaust manifolds and only had to shift the steering box 3/4" Not the greatest for flow but 265 Power Pack engines exhaled thru them.

These are horrible ugly manifolds but dump towards the back. I think this might get you past your steering box. They dump between 5 and 7 instead of in the middle. If you are getting a Sid's drop axles they are located close to you.. might be worth giving them a call. Nice to meet another Oklahoman.

I am not 100 percent sure if it would work or not. I know they hug the block pretty close and dump toward the back. They are off mid-late 80's gm cars. You can usually get them at the bone yard for a couple of bucks. It would be worth a try. But if you ever want to add headers you might want to go ahead and shift the steering box.
