anyone use a rubberized firewall cover?
I noticed that American Classic Truck Parts sells both the cardboard firewall covers (which are presumably like the originals), or rubberized firewall covers (which are about $20 cheaper). The pictures of them look pretty much the same. Has anyone used either the cardboard or rubberized covers? Any opinions about fit, appearance, durability. I need a new firewall cover and it is hard to tell if these aftermarket covers are any good. It sounds like a rubberized cover would be a good idea, but I question why it is cheaper. Thanks for any feedback
Here is the picture of the rubberized cover. |

Re: anyone use a rubberized firewall cover?
I did a forum search and only found one post about it.
If you scroll down his thread, he mentions something about the fit: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...61#post6709261

Re: anyone use a rubberized firewall cover?
I bought one, doesn't fit so great around the center up high. maybe with some sound stuff placed under it would fill it out some. you really cant see it anyway. I don't know how the cardboard one fits, do they fit good?

Re: anyone use a rubberized firewall cover?
The cardboard one fit good as long as you properly fold the cover along the pre-folded lines. Had a little trouble with fitment around the gas pedal where all the bends come into play. Go slow and work the pre-folded bends in to avoid making an unwanted bend in the cardboard. I also didnt know about the firewall pad installation tool, and bent the fasteners up. I don't like the look of the fasteners protruding into the engine compartment anyway so I'm thinking about using allen had cap screws with the allen heads by the engine. Overall it fit good, heres mine with some paint on the cardboard.

Re: anyone use a rubberized firewall cover?
Just put in a rubber one on a friends truck. He got it from LMC. Seemed ok but it was long on the bottom like it was suppose to tuck under the carpet. Like tucking a dress shirt into a pair of pants.

Still trying to decide between the cardboard one and the rubber one.

Re: anyone use a rubberized firewall cover?
For what it's worth, having done the rubber one already....if I was getting one for myself it would be the cardboard one. I say this because the rubber one looks way off from o.e.m. It lacks the rigid form of the preformed cardboard. You know what I mean? The rubber one is more like a heavy raincoat material bonded to the insullation. Whereas it's cut to shape, it's not molded to form.

Re: anyone use a rubberized firewall cover?
After reading this I'm not sure which one I am going to get now. I like the way the rubber one looks. The only thing I hate about both is the way the fastners are going to be sticking out of my nice clean firewall and make it ugly.

Re: anyone use a rubberized firewall cover?
Well cardboard would most certainly air out better, right? Maybe the rubber would keep the wet out but also trap the condensation in. I would go cardboard.

Re: anyone use a rubberized firewall cover?
Hey how my script is so small? The site must have switched some stuff around or something cause my phone is not quite as compatible with it as it once was.
Nevermind, I got it.

Re: anyone use a rubberized firewall cover?
if you are putting carpet you won't be able to see much anyway. if using the rubber mat(if you have one) would show more maybe?

Re: anyone use a rubberized firewall cover?
61K10,
Where did you order you carpet from? It goes a good ways up the firewall. That is exactly what I was wanting. Also do you have any shots of how it fits around the gas tank brackets? Bret

Re: anyone use a rubberized firewall cover?
I got a couple extra yards of the carpeting when I ordered, so I will be covering up the back wall with that, possibly the kick panels too.

Re: anyone use a rubberized firewall cover?
To anyone who has used the cardboard with jute backing, did you use glue to help hold it in place or do the fasteners do a good enough job?
Thanks Larry |

Re: anyone use a rubberized firewall cover?
Seems the leaning is toward getting the cardboard one over the rubber one.
I went to some of the usual classic parts sites and noticed quite a difference in price.
