rust removing/protecting fender bolts??

My fender bolts have surface rust and wanted to 1) clean them 2) remove rust and 3) paint (or anything else possible that will protect them as if when they were new).
So for #2 I bought this metal rescue rust remover and dropped the bolts in a container and filled it up with the liquid. I let them take a bath for 24+ hours. The rust is gone from the bolt, but how can I protect them now. I was thinking primer and paint but will that work, will they still bolt on with the coat of paint or is there another/better way.
What have you all done with your bolts when you painted your truck/parts, if removed? or will i have to get new ones? Appreciate all you assistance.

Thanks.

My Porsches all had zinc coated hardware and all were very very good condition. If you want better than stock, that's what you should do. Stock GM, just primer and paint them.

Re: rust removing/protecting fender bolts??

After soaking the original bolts in that same product I dipped each one in clean motor oil as I was putting new fenders on my truck and all the bolts are still rust free after many washes and driving in the rain. Although I'm not sure how long that will last for so it may not hurt to brush some fresh oil on the exposed head periodically.

If you want a factory look paint them if you want them rust free forever look in to different coatings or maybe changing them out for stainless.

I would just send them to be re zinced. Fairly cheap, rust resistant and nice and shiney!

I was told to use Quicksilver Perfect Seal, which is a marine grade anti-sieze coating. Apparently it works quite well. It is, however, quite pricy. Regular anti-seize from the parts store works well.
