New Shroud...and other stuff

I stopped by a local metal fab shop a few weeks ago and asked if they could build me a shroud for the radiator in the 71. I have the electric fans with a little shroud made on them but it doesn't cover the whole radiator. He came out and measured it and made me a shroud for $20.00. It's 2" deep so I can trim it down if need be. It's 28.5" long to fit between the tanks and 18" tall.
I went to pick it up and asked him to look at making me a motor cover. I hope he has it ready this week some time.
Both are made out of aluminum.
Now I have to find time to install them!

After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Question Re: New Shroud...and other stuff

Well I picked up the engine cover and have the trim all done. Just have to decide if I want to have the front part welded on it are not.
What do you all think?
I'm wondering if it will make the engine run hotter also.
I'm going to have it painted the same Gun metal grey as the truck bottom.

Hi Andy, nice find! I would put the front part put on for strength and one on back as well. With mine I think if I didn't have the parts on it would be way too flimsy and vibrate.

Thanks,
The front will be put on for sure to strength. The back is fine. I have it bolted down on top and on both sides.

More than likely it will be Grey like the bottom of my truck but it may get 2 toned! I have some decals being made for it also. Haven't decided yet but it will get painted for sure. Going to see if he can louver it also on top to help with the heat.

Drove the truck this morning and it did fine. Temp was not even noticed being any different than before.

Took the cover back this morning to have the front weld on. $80.00 for it. He is going to make me a cover for the radiator now also.

If anyone is interested in this cover LMK. $100.00 + shipping to your door. You will have to trim it out to meet your engines needs but it easly done with snips. That's how I did mine. The front will be already trimed per mine but you may need to trim it more for you application.

Re: New Shroud...and other stuff

Andy, what size bolts did you use to hold the cover in place? I bought M6-1.0 bolts but they seem just a hair big. The bolt I took out of the intake fit into M6-1.0 slot at the store so I thought the bolt would fit. They start to thread into the hole but get tight real quick, I haven't tried to torque on them a little to make them fit yet.

Wink Re: New Shroud...and other stuff

On the 2 top center bolts I used 2 of the 3 that held the plastic peice on the back of the intake. The black plastic in the picture I removed it and used the 2 center ones to mount. Sorry I have no idea what size they are.

The sides I used 4-20x1/4" bolts in the coil brackets with a spacer and lock nuts.

If you know anyone with a bead roller it would take out some of the flex or you can do it yourself. They sell one at Harbor Freight.

Thanks,
I don't think it will need it though. It wasn't flappy at all it wasn't big enough and with the 4 attachment points it was pretty solid.

Well I know not many of you are interested in it but here it is any way. I got it installed and it looks pretty nice I think and it hides all the ugly truck intake for sure. I still have to get it painted though.

Question Re: New Shroud...and other stuff

Got a question for you all. On the passenger side fuel rail I have a pressure gauge mounted. Can I take it loose and extend it so I can see it once I have the engine cover on permently. I want to know if I unscrew it that it want loose pressure right because of the schrader valve.
I want to buy a extension also if anybody knows where to get one.

Thanks man!
Yea me too! I got to find some one that can do air brushing on it. A friend of mine has some 6.0 Bowtie decals for it also. But I want a little more custom job on it though I think. Painting it will hide the weld some to I hope.
I got to get that new booster done and then pull the radiator out and get the shroud installed.
