Maine titles or registration explanation please!
I found a truck for sale, but the guy tells me he has no title for it. He says the title is not required in Maine. I would want to bring it into Canada as a whole truck and not just for parts. Can any members from Maine explain how you register a vehicle in your state please.

Re: Maine titles or registration explanation please!
We just bring in a bill of sale with the VIN and selling price with the sellers signature on it and we can register the vehicle. We do not receive a title from the state after we register it either. I believe the cutoff is either 1978 and earlier or older than 15 years or something similar.

What do you need to get it across the border?

A registration and bill of sale according to Canada Customs. They need the paperwork 3 days before I would cross with the truck to make sure everything is legit. After the truck can be registered in Canada after inspection for road worthiness.

I wouldn't buy anything without a title if you are trying to import it, unless it is for parts.

Make sure you have your Ducks all lined up if you do buy it. A friend sold a boat to a guy. He got to the border and they didn't like his paperwork. It has sat in a yard in Buffalo ever since. Its been about two months.

Re: Maine titles or registration explanation please!
Yeah it's weird that we don't use titles on older (90's haha) cars and trucks in Maine. I have only had a title for a couple of my past vehicles but have sold them out of state. I think the buyers just filled out title applications for their states. Maybe Canada has a similar title application process?

Re: Maine titles or registration explanation please!
You're going to need a Maine title for it. As you know, the original title needs to be at the US Customs three business days before crossing. Then, you show up, the US will check the title, check the VIN, and stamp your title. You then cross to Canada, where you will pay tax, show your bill of sale, they will check the title for the stamp, check the VIN, and you go home. Then, you get to register it in your province. I needed a letter from GM that stated the weight of the vehicle. They wanted me to trailer it to a scale, but I lucked out. PM me for more info if needed.

Re: Maine titles or registration explanation please!
Here in Michigan they find it hard to believe that Maine didnt title older vehicles , though I have not had a problem with most that I have titled here ,just a bill of sale or an old registration showing I owned it ..
the last GTO I bought in Newbrunswick Nova Scotia from the chief of the tribe there ,the border guy made me throw out the canadian license plate ,but told me there was no duty since it was made in the USA , he failed to look at the door jam that said "made in canada" I titled that one here in Michigan with only the bill of sale from 20 years ago... |

Re: Maine titles or registration explanation please!
Wrote an email yesterday on Sunday and got a response today this Monday morning, before 8am. Impressive.
Dear Mr. Meloche, The State of Maine only issues titles on vehicles 1995 and newer. What I can offer you is a letter of verification which will state our title law and verify (by VIN) that the vehicle is not registered or titled in Maine. The state also offers a Warranty Title. A Warranty Title may be issued to a Maine resident who is the owner of an antique auto, horseless carriage or classic vehicle upon documented and notarized evidence of ownership and upon payment of the required fee of $40.00. A Warranty Title denotes that evidence made available to the Secretary of State indicates that there are no liens or encumbrances against the vehicle and that the applicant is the owner. It is not intended to authenticate the vehicle’s history. Please let me know if you have any questions.
