Anyone ever bought a new one? Local parts shop said I can't buy a new one, anyone have a part number to look up, or a supplier?

I was told the truck motor had a different water pump than the car motor. Any truth to that?

Re: 65 409 water pump

I think the ports, and maybe general size. I haven't taken it off the truck yet (1965 GMC 980 fire truck). I don't really want to until I can make sure I have the stuff and done my research. Don't want parts strewn around the fire hall for the whole time I'm looking for a pump....

Re: 65 409 water pump

Other than the around 40 pounds in weight over the car pumps, the other differences are the pulleys and fans. The truck units are much larger and the car and truck pumps are interchangeable. The truck pump raises the fan several inches and the hose sizes are different.

So...if you have a truck pump, best to stick with it unless you want to purchase fan/pulleys/hoses for a car pump.

They are rebuildable also....might be a better option.

Re: 65 409 water pump

Not all issues, but I learned that from the gurus on the 348-409 forum a few months ago.

All the "w" blocks have the same wp ports to the block/pump. The pumps are a hodgepodge of bb/sb parts...I can get the parts up in the morning on the bearings and such...can be rebuilt same as most gm pumps of that era

Re: 65 409 water pump

Small block impeller, seal and bearings interchange with the 348-409 water pumps
Should be able to source those pretty easy if your core is good and be in business

Re: 65 409 water pump

Thank you very much 1963c-10, that is helpful. Am I looking at rebuilding because I won't be able to source a new one? I have had trouble with parts guys here just saying you can't get it if it's tough to look up, especially being here in Canada, and all the parts have to come from the states. If you have any info on a new one, that would help.
Thanks again
