Brake pedal rod conversion

I have an after market power booster. Thread pitch is 3/8 24. The factory clevis is 7/16 20. Thoughts on getting the two together?

Re: Brake pedal rod conversion

should be able to find an adapter or maybe a 3/8 clevis and open the end a bit to fit the pedal arm. Should be able to find a brake line adapter for 3/8 - 7/16 that I think would work for this application.

My thoughts that you may find helpful: You need 3 pieces: 1 coupling nut @ 3/8 X 24; 1 piece of 3/8 X 24 threaded rod(or similar bolt that's long enough to cut the head off & still be long enough); and 1 clevis with 3/8 X 24 female threads. You might have to file a bit on the insides of the "U" on the clevis so it glides easily around brake pedal. And, optionally, you may wish to use a couple of 3/8 X 24 nuts for jamb nuts; hmmmmm, that makes 5 or 6 pieces, doesn't it?

If u have trouble locating pieces and are handy with & have access to taps and dies, this is more direct. Get a short piece of hex rod just big enough to drill & tap two holes: first hole--CENTERED--into one end about 7/8" deep, and thread it 3/8X24 female. Drill into other end--CENTERED--about the same depth but tap it 7/16X20 female. [This makes a reducing coupling nut, going from 7/16X20 to 3/8X24, & NOT a standard one to be found "around every corner". But, it makes a neat adapter.] Now, use a piece of 7/16X20 threaded rod, & cut to fit, to couple that end to factory clevis.

In both cases, every place where threads adjoin is a place for fine adjustment. But be sure they are threaded sufficiently deep to be strong! Don't forget this is brakes we are working on.

Lowe's should have all the pieces u need--for at least ONE of the approaches.

HTH,
sam

Re: Brake pedal rod conversion

I cut mine off and used a different model with the adjustable rod. Welded them back together with a sleeve.

I'm in the same boat. I know they sell kits for this but I cant see spending $45 on it. Let me know what you come up with.

Dunno what u guys may be waiting for. One poster showed you a simple, direct, practically 1-step method: weld 2 threaded rods together using a sleeve. Another method laid out a,b,c,d,e's of "nuts and bolts" to buy if you have no welder and only hand tools. A 3rd method laid out a neat connection if u happen to have taps and dies in addition to simple hand tools.

One may agree that a better choice for op's booster, as a 1st step, could've made the process go smoother/simpler/cheaper/faster/more nearly direct; but we all tried to move u from where we are now to where we wanna be as directly, simply, and inexpensively as practical. And, we know all 3 methods will work!

If u are lacking in mechanical skills & need to save the last dime on this relatively simple project, an opinion from one who has experience with all 3 methods would beg u to have them welded together, using a sleeve--and this was NOT my reply!

If u enjoy mechanical work and wish to gain useful experience fabbing a pretty, tidy, strong, and adjustable finished project, u might choose a method utilizing taps and/or dies. This would result in your having leftovers*[I'd rather call it "inventory".] which u will consume, and be happy that u happened to have those extras on hand, for future projects.

Extra parts left over are never wasted unless u run completely out of ideas. And with our trucks, few of us ever say with conviction, "Now at last! I have finished my truck!"

Good luck and enjoy the resultant satisfaction.

Bill & LS64C10, on reply #3, I suggested u buy 3 parts & make a completely new pedal rod to replace orig. & let it meet the booster rod. Here's a link showing the 3 parts--in a $25 Ebay kit--but which should be bought cheaper from Lowe's[or similar] in individual pieces--kinda like 8-12 dollars!

Also, I'm trying to show u a pic of those 3 items to help clarify things. Hopefully this helps show just how simple it can be done. And, good luck.
