57-59 deluxe heater control valve

Hi guys,

Anyone know where to get said valve? Mine's leaking. The 55-56 one with 5/8" tubes is all over the web but I can't find the later one which I want. The parts houses say that the older style will fit well on 57-59 but I can't see how it would when the tubing is the wrong size. Specifically the 90deg elbow would need to step up from 5/8" to 3/4", don't know where to get such a part. Any tip on how to move forward is welcomed!

Re: 57-59 deluxe heater control valve

here's a bunch of pics of my original 57 DeLuxe heater. going clear back to the 235 it had two 5/8" heater hoses on it. Both tubes coming out of the firewall are 5/8". When I needed to loop the heater hoses after my freshly re-built heater puked anti-freeze all over the floor, being a Chevy guy from way back I stopped at an auto parts store to buy a 5/8" to 3/4" hose adapter. I was really surprised when I realized both were 5/8".

BTW, this truck was a very original un-molested survivor when I bought it from the original owner in '84. I don't think you need any 3/4" at all. If the engine has one of each hose barbs change the 3/4 one to 5/8.

Re: 57-59 deluxe heater control valve

When my stock 59 heater core and valve puked for the second time I got one that fit in the housing, modified the fitting to go out the firewall holes and installed a valve in the hose. Was a lot cheaper than the stock one. That was back when you could go into a parts store and the guy would pull out the radiator box and you could find what you needed.

Re: 57-59 deluxe heater control valve

yeah, actually that was sort of a fun deal to do. I pulled it because the core was leaking, took it to a known good radiator shop and had it fixed. It was couple months later I got it back in and hooked up. first time I ran it and warmed it up good it blew anti-freeze all over everything. Dang. still unhooked today. gotta get it fixed, winter is coming to Phx soon. The mercury will plummet into the 60's.

Re: 57-59 deluxe heater control valve

Have an old truck like that. When I got it, the heater core was already bypassed, so I just drove it through about 3 winters here in Arkansas(where the 60's is a nice autumn day).
When I finally swapped the V8 into the truck, I decided to hook up the heater. Took the heater apart, capped one tube off and took my Mity-Vac and drew 10" of vacuum on the other tube. It held for 8 hours, so I reassembled the heater, hooked it up, and it's been working fine for about 7 winters now.

I used the 55-56 valve in mine. from what I remember, the 90 deg elbow is just a small piece of rubber hose with hose clamps

Re: 57-59 deluxe heater control valve

Ahh the memories of rebuilding and installing my deluxe heater. Mine is from a 55 and it was perfect , but I nut and bolt restored it anyway. Both my tubes are 5/8", as is the 90 degree rubber hose. Makes heat like nobody's business, valve works perfectly. Love cruising in the cool fall weather with heat cranking and windows down

Re: 57-59 deluxe heater control valve

I actually went through the EXACT thing you are right now. I bought a new Deluxe heater valve for 55-59 Chevy Truck. When I got it it had a smaller diameter barb than the one going into the heater core. Do a search on ebay, or online, you can buy a rubber 90 deg 5/8 to 3/4 hose and make that work. I also went into my local O'rielly's, went to the back where ALL the hose were, looked, looked and looked and found that particular hose there. So you might luck out that way as well.
