How do I get the old seamsealer off of my drip rails? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Does anyone have a good way to get the old, dryed and cracker. seamsealer out of the deiprails? If not, what is the best you have come up with? Thanks and any suggestions will be appreciated.

I use a grinder with a stiff wire brush attachment to dig it right out. Trevor

Wire brush on the grinder was my thought before I finished reading the question. I have a tool from TP tools called a rust and paint eater, if your doing a whole resto or much work it is a huge time saver. It is a knock off of a Spnitznagel tool of the design that cost well over the $500 mark. It is a multi use type deal you will reach for in many cases where you normally scratch your head for a moment or two thinking witch tool would be best.

I used a propane torch, flat head screwdriver and putty knife. Made quick work of it. Then cleaned up with a wire wheel on a drill.

I just simply took a decent sized flat head screwdriver and very lightly tapped on the end of it with a hammer and chunks just went flying. My old sealer was really stiff from sitting for all those years, and it came of in very large, hard pieces. And it only took 15 minutes!

Me too. It cleaned the old stuff out quick. I used the wire brush to get the residue and small stuff out. Then I cleaned it good with brake cleaner before priming and resealing. Don't bother with the single stage stuff, mines cracked almost as bad as originally after 4 years.

I tryed chizzling it out, but mine is hard and stuck to tight. It sounds like heat and a chizzle and maybe a scraper followed with a wire brush will work. Thanks for all of your expertise!

I also used the screw driver. Another good tool is a set of picks, since it's layered metals at the roof it really helps you get in between them.
