Lets talk about gas gages

A few weeks ago mine went to "E", and yes there is gas in it! Any ideas on how to get it working again? 'electrical stuff is not my forte.

Have you checked the sending unit to make sure the float didn't sink?

Re: Lets talk about gas gages

You can take the sender out of the tank relatively easily. If the float on it is full of gas,or its missing, then thats your problem.

Also, its easier to diagnose issues, and get OHM readings, with the sender in hand and wired up...

Re: Lets talk about gas gages

Disconnect the wire from the back of the gauge that goes to the tank. Gauge should go to full or more. That will mean the gauge is good. If this checks okay, go to the next step. Reconnect the wire to the back of the gauge.

Then take the wire loose from the sending unit. If the gauge does not go to full, it means the wire is shorted to ground between the tank and the gauge. Run a new wire.

If the gauge goes to full or more, it means the sender is shorted out inside the tank. Replace the sender.

Edit: Make sure you have 12 volts to the other terminal at the gauge in first step.

Re: Lets talk about gas gages

All this time I never knew you were into 60-66 Chevs too Pete. I've had a 63, 65 GMC, and the white 60 you see in my Avatar. I just picked up the 66 LBSS in my sig when I moved down here to AL in Sept. Small world. NC Blackhawk.
