Stock Steering Rebuild

I have only had my truck about 3 months. I was finally able to drive it for the first time yesterday because I had to put a new motor in it. While I was great to finally drive it, i found that above about 30mph it has a bad wobble.

Its a 61 Panel. The truck literally sat in the desert for 20 years. The tires have full tread, but look like they could crumble at any second.

I have found lots of threads on upgrading the steering/suspension. I have no plans on lowering the truck, and drum brakes are fine. I do plan on adding a power booster and dual line master. Plus new tires will be in the next week or 2.

But what about the best place for stock replacement steering parts?

O'reilly wants a mountain of money for tie rods, and ball joints are expensive too.

Are there other parts that work and are less money?

Thanks for the tip on CPP. They have The ball joints for $35!

Put some new tires on it, then take it for another drive. You would be amazed how old rotting tires can affect things. For a vehicle that has been sitting for that long, safety first, brakes, tires, steering should be your first concerns. I bought tie rod ends etc. from Advance Auto Parts, excellent pricing, not sure if you have them where you are though.

Were the prices you got from O'Reilly's for Moog parts or their Master Pro line? Moog parts are spendy, but they are very good quality. The Master Pro parts are much less $$ and often have a lifetime warranty.

Yeah, the 'Rare Parts' are way over priced. Have you called them or just looked online? I just looked up ball joints for a '63 and it shows the Master Pro upper ball joints for $16.99 and the lowers for $14.99

Edit: never mind, I forgot you have a '61. Those parts are spendy

Just online. But CPP and Classic industries are both local to me. Truck shop and brothers are close to.

If you got to O'riellys online site and look up all the Moog parts you need. You can then go to Amazon and search for them by part #. I did this for my 64'. O'riellys bill came to just around $750. I found all the same Moog parts on Amazon for around $350. You just have to know your part numbers.

This included ball joints, tie rod ends, control arm bushings, idler and pitman arm.

I tend to use RockAuto.com for much of these types of parts. Way cheaper than local.
