Brake lines for 1961 with 1984 Xmbr disc
I installed a 1984 front crossmember with new rotors in my 61 and I need to run brake lines on the entire frame, front to back, and it has drum brakes in the rear. I haven't found a brake line kit for this setup and I was wondering what other guys have done. I'm hoping there is a ready made kit out there somewhere. Thanks!

did you ever have any luck tracking down a kit or something that might work? I'm about to do the swap on my 62 and was wondering the same thing.

Nope not yet. I am thinking that I will soon be learning the art of running brake lines from scratch.

When I did my 66 I ran all new lines. Used the nickel copper line and it went together very nicely. You can get it in pre done lengths or a spool of it.

On my 63 I used every single line off of the 80 model donor truck. No mods needed whatsoever. Everything from the master cylinder, prop valve, brake hoses, and all hard lines.

I don't think I can do that on my 61 Kevin. Frames are way different, unless you know different?

Re: Brake lines for 1961 with 1984 Xmbr disc
I'm not sure of the exact differences between the 61 frame (yours), the 63 frames (Tx Firefighter) and the 80's frames. There may be some tweaking here and there but if he said they'd work, I'd darn sure listen to him. He's one on here that you learn to listen to.
Enough so, when I do mine, I'll pull the lines too.

Re: Brake lines for 1961 with 1984 Xmbr disc
I also used the NiCopp (Nickle Copper Alloy) lines while doing mine on my '64. I liked the fact that it will never rust and was SO easy to flare and bend. It also is rated for almost the same pressure as stainless. The cost for all the line and fittings from Car Quest was about 2/3s that of a pre bent stainless kit and about equal to that of a mild steel one. Looking at Jegs it looks like it might be cheaper still... Just food for thought.

Re: Brake lines for 1961 with 1984 Xmbr disc
NiCopp lines all the way. Just ran new lines on my whip today. NiCopp is worth the money and the time spent. So easy to work with, you wont even really need a tubing bender, flaring is a dream. Im forever sold on NiCopp lines.

I did the same thing as Texas Kevin to a great extent, and used O'Riely's for what didn't swap.

Re: Brake lines for 1961 with 1984 Xmbr disc
I did the same as Kevin, I used all lines, proportional valve and lines. I did have to make a bracket for the proportional valve and had some minor tweaking to get it all to work but again this is on a 64 C10 but here's some pictures if it helps you at all.

Re: Brake lines for 1961 with 1984 Xmbr disc
I also replaced all the brake lines on my 65 and did the cross member swap from a 78 chevy. I love those brake lines, I think I only used a bender 5 times on the entire truck...

So the donor trucks that you pulled the parts from had disc front, and drum rear?

All 71-87 trucks had disc/drum from the factory.

Re: Brake lines for 1961 with 1984 Xmbr disc
Ah ok, thanks again! I think I know where a couple old trucks are sitting still. I wonder if I can use the brake booster too? It looks like it might hit the shifter linkage at the firewall.
