Tailgate- repair or replace?

well here it is. got a pretty bug dent and ya got to slam it in order for it to actually latch shut. so, can it be fixed? or should I just save the trouble and buy a new one? also, that rust hole in the bottom left corner, how can I fix that?

I'd say try to find a decent used one. That's a tough spot to try to work a dent out

Replace, but only if you are going to work on and paint your truck soon. If it's a driver, I would leave it all one color for now.

As for the rust hole you'll have to patch it with sheat metal either new or a piece cut off an old panel like a fender or door that's junk. Cut around the rust hole big enough to get to solid metal, cut the patch to fit the hole and weld it in. Search the web for videos

you probably gotta split the tailgate open to straighten the sheet metal out, then re spot weld it back together, its fixable depending your your metal skills and access to a MIG welding machine, so if you have more time than money go fer it, otherwise find a new used one in much better shape

You might try replacing the hinge pieces and lubing the latch assemblies. Getting that dent probably tweaked the hinges. The bedside gaps look out of whack a bit too.

You might be surprised just how much of that damage can be worked out just by tapping (with a big hammer) on the area where the metal has buckled. It sort of reverses the way in which the skin deformed. Of course it won't come anywhere close to a 100% fix, but it will help... and for that matter, what can it hurt? --Rob

You could always do both. Just be out a little time trying to fix it.
