Short Bed Vin # Confirmation
Anyone know how I can verify if a truck I am in interested in buying is a factory short bed and not a shortened long bed? I did not see any threads about this or how to decode a vin and determine this. Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Short Bed Vin # Confirmation
Model number on the SPID also tells you -
ex: CE10734 in the "07" place, 07=swb/115" (07 is really a reference to the measurement of cowl to axle distance: 42") 09=lwb/127" 10=lwb w/ext - 133" (longhorn) If no SPID, look for original grease pencil marks on passenger side of cowl in engine compartment - above the a/c-heater box, the model # was often scribbled there. If/when you look in person, check the frame for fish plates where it may have been cut. Some folks do it right, some do it in a shabby way. Many ways to convert long to short to be aware of: - some cut the frame and add a swb bed - some cut the frame AND cut the long box down - some swap what was originally a lwb truck cab onto an original swb frame several reasons why you may see a 127" wb (lwb) indication on the SPID of a "now" swb truck. As long as you're aware what to look for and how the changes can be made, you'll be an informed buyer. Nothing wrong with doing the shortening, unless you want the truck to be an original shortie. In that case, it's gotta have a 115" wb and CE10734 on the SPID. (emphasis on the "07" part - the CE could be KE for a 4x4 and the 34 could be an 04 is a stepside). CE10734 is a swb fleetside 2wd truck, for example. KE10704 is a swb 4x4 stepside, etc.) Last edited by jocko; 12-07-2014 at 08:06 PM. |

Re: Short Bed Vin # Confirmation
The VIN doesn't tell us what it is, you need the model number then go with Jocko's info.

Re: Short Bed Vin # Confirmation
You should take a photo of the SPID. They are easily faked badly, but rarely faked well (though the can be faked perfectly, so invest accordingly).

Re: Short Bed Vin # Confirmation
Will the weights listed on the metal vin plate on the door jamb provide any info on SWB vs. LWB?

Re: Short Bed Vin # Confirmation
not really. gvwr ranges can provide a hint as to whether it is a 1/2, 3/4, or 1 ton. The gvwr should correspond with the allowable gvwrs that the 3rd digit of the VIN (4th digit in 72) - i.e. 1=1/2 ton, 2=3/4 ton, 3=1 ton.
For instance, in shawn's case, a 70 k10, the gvwr should either be 5200 or 5600. The only reason I say "not really" rather than "never" above is because you CAN kinda do some process of elimination.. I don't have all the stats handy, but, for instance on the extreme end... 7500 gvwr wasn't available on a swb truck, so if your plate had that, you'd suspect a heavy truck cab swap onto a swb chassis or a frame shortening. At that point, start counting lugs, etc to see if hvy duty 8 lug or 1/2 ton 6 lug (in 70) |

Re: Short Bed Vin # Confirmation
A 4x4, cool! Interesting options as a short bed. That was built as a working truck. 292, heavy springs, manual throttle, west coast junior mirrors, cargo lamp, and 4-speed. That's a neat truck.
