Dark Bronze paint
I am sure that I have asked this before but, has anyone ever even seen the dark bronze paint? From what I have read it was a 70 only color. My SPID says the Chevy number for this color of paint is 528. I was just wondering if anyone had a pic of this color to encourage me to finish my body work so I can hopefully get it painted n the spring. For some reason I cant find any dark bronze trucks only medium bronze. Thanks for looking.

Re: Dark Bronze paint
The SPID paint codes would be:
528 Dark Bronze body, Solid paint 552 Conventional Two-Tone, 528 Dark Bronze body with 521 White roof 583 Special Two-Tone, 528 Dark Bronze body with 521 White roof and rockers http://paintref.com/cgi-bin/colorcod...=50&size=large The only truck I have good pictures of has been repainted in what I believe is the original color just not correctly nor to the SPID. But here you are a former 583 Special Two-Tone GMC with a 625 gold vinyl interior. As a note 70 trucks did not have a parchment interior option but instead offered a darker ivory/gold color shown here.

Yeah, I was completely off. I've never seen that dark bronze. Interesting color.

Wow thanks guys I realy like that color. I want to repaint the truck back to original even more now since it seems to be an uncommon color.

Re: Dark Bronze paint
What is the difference between the dark bronze and vermilion? The truck in Ironcanine's pic looks like vermilion.

Re: Dark Bronze paint
They are similar. And it's always hard with photos and oxidation and repaints. But my assessment on color chips is the dark bronze is more of a brown tone and vermilion is more of a red tone.

Re: Dark Bronze paint
The dark bronze "one that got away" for me was this 583 special two tone. It was a big block CST Custom Camper Longhorn to boot.
Truly wish I'd bought this one when I had the chance. I think the dark bronze with gold interior trim is a great combo. |

Re: Dark Bronze paint
Great truck Jocko. Thanks for the share. Look at Janesville doing weird things again...black A/C vents. I want there to be a formula for that but I don't think there is. Could've painted it body color...could've painted it sandalwood...nope, black works. I wonder if they're even painted at all or just raw.

Re: Dark Bronze paint
I'm not at all well versed in the intricacies of the optioning on this generation of trucks. I'm more of an observer watching from the squarebody side. But I have noticed on patina trucks that the factory primer is sometimes black on the front clip and on the bed, and red on the cab. The interesting thing in this picture is how much you can see it through the finish paint.

Re: Dark Bronze paint
That truck sure is purdy! The red and black primer issue was around for a long time. Back in the '60s, yellow and silver cars got written up at the factory for color match for that reason. After awhile inspection didn't bother with it. It wasn't really that noticeable, and buyers weren't complaining. Neither covered that well, and I can tell on that truck the cab and doors are more red. I had a '64 Malibu that was silver. When we repainted it, we laid gray primer over the entire car's sheet metal first.

Re: Dark Bronze paint
it was the case on both sides of this truck, which lends to the theory. You can clearly see the black becoming more prominent as the paint fades in the hood pic.

Re: Dark Bronze paint
Here's the only dark bronze poly I've ever seen. It was right down the road from me when I lived in Denver. At first glance I thought it was Dark Gold Poly, which also seems to be pretty rare but after getting a closer look I'm sure it's the even more rare, 1970 only, Dark Bronze Poly (just really faded). You can see the color best on the painted area under the cowl and the passenger door. This one even has the factory D89 paint stripe. Also, the Colorado sun has done a number on the paint and you can really see the black primer showing through on certain panels. Looks to be originally purchased at George Irvin in Denver.

Re: Dark Bronze paint
Were these trucks spray painted or dipped?
Very interesting observation about what was primered red vs black and how it shows later in life. |

This is precisely why time capsule vehicles are so special. I'm dying to see a garaged since new dark bronze metallic beauty now.

They were sprayed… I really like this color a lot. Hope to see some more examples of it.

Re: Dark Bronze paint
At most, dipping is done these days for galvanic protection. All vehicles are still sprayed, as far as I know, though the methods have changed.

Re: Dark Bronze paint
have had my dark bronze for 41 years. you can still see some metallic in the paint. I allways liked the color. but I use it as a truck so it has many blemishes. one year only I understand. it says white/ dark bronze 552 on the spid. BROWN 70
