Carter BB-1 updraft issues- HELP!!!

I've been working on an OT vehicle (my dad's '28 Dodge) and am having real trouble with the Carter BB-1.

This is an early version with the brass accelerator pump and step up piston. My problem is that I get more of a "burble" out of the nozzle instead of a spray and as a result, the engine barely runs and gas is pouring out of the mouth of the carb.

Does anyone have any thoughts/ideas on what the problem may be?

Thanks, Bill

Re: Carter BB-1 updraft issues- HELP!!!

2 different issues here. first and most important is the running over. this means the float is not controlling the fuel level. bad float, bad needle/seat, dirt or other stuff caught in needle/seat. need to get this fixed before there's an unfortunate accident with the spilled fuel and a spark.

the accelerator pump issue is likely a worn out or dried up leather cup on the plunger.

Both of these together sort of insinuate that maybe this carb was sitting for a long time and hasn't been rebuilt. Yes?

tmoble- thanks for responding!

Yup, the car sat for at least 10 years when I moved from Pennsylvania to Georgia (Dad lost interest in driving it). I brought it down from Philly a year ago and tried to get it running, but the tank, lines, and carb were gummed up and full of bad gas/varnish. A good friend flushed the tank and blew the lines for me and I went through the carb.

The accelerator pump is the early version with the brass plate- didn't see ANY leather, so it may have disintegrated. Will be going work on the car tomorrow (it's about 90 minutes away at my buddy's shop) and will take a better look at the float needle/seat and the pump!

Will also try to get a couple pics to share and see if you see something I don't.

Re: Carter BB-1 updraft issues- HELP!!!

Spent the day finding/fixing little issues, but still didn't get the car running.

- trued up the flanges on the carb and adapter (the original carb was a Stromberg UX 2 with a flange that was perpendicular to most flanges)
- tightened up the throttle shaft
- rechecked the step up piston and float valve and reset the idle screw and main metering screw
- blocked off the vacuum line to the vacuum tent (the car runs off of an electric fuel pump

These things solved the flooding issue, but now it seems to have an air leak- we ran the idle screw from all the way in to all the way out in increments without any change in rpm.

I'm inclined to agree with you that the accelerator pump is worn- like I said earlier, this is an early version with the brass pump and step up piston. I'll try to get some pics on as soon as I can.
