59 gmc loooong bed

So we picked up another truck, a 59 gmc big window, hydramatic, factory v8/power steering/power brakes, and a long box. We got it at a good price for all those options, but the trade off is that its not a short box. Plan is to cut it. To be honest, we knew it was long but not this long, its the longest one you can get. Its been picked up and on its way home to the cold, but it wasnt until we saw these more recent pics of it being picked up that we realized how long it is. Its got the 100 badge, the VIN says 102 which is half ton long box, its got 6 lug wheels but from my previous understanding, and also from just reading on here again today, it seems as though the longest length box might not have been available in the half ton. I will clarify though that the info i read here today was for chevs, perhaps it was different for gmcs?

Not sure what to think. If it was the intermediate length box, we would have pondered cutting it to make a short box. Now that its this long, we definitely need to do something with it. Either way though, i was just curious if anyone had some insight into this truck config. Was that length of box only on 3/4 or 1 ton? but then it would have 8 lug wheels right? I cant imagine someone just putting longer bed sides on it to make a longer box.

Its no big deal, we probably would have bought it anyway for the options it has, and have no problem shortening it if needed.

Good looking truck. If you don't mind me asking, how long is the bed?

So i dont have the actual truck to measure, but now that i think of it, I would say its 97". From doing more reading, there seems to be 3 long bed sizes, and then of course the short bed. Id say this is the middle of the 3 long bed versions, the longest one being the 1 ton long box which is bigger than this with larger steps, and the shortest long box being the "intermediate" one i mentioned earlier.

I think short box is 77" , intermediate would be 89", and this one is probably 97"

The place i got these numbers from states that the 97" can be a half ton long bed version.

Re: 59 gmc loooong bed

oh geez, we are on opposite ends of the spectrum, cant even imagine what you are up to. Sounds like youre gonna need a 1 ton long box.

Shouldnt be much of a build, we keep things simple and old school... get it up and running properly, do the frame work, some wheels, lower it a bit, perhaps paint the top of the dash... thats about it.

Nice truck, its your and your time and money, but I would keep it long. Repop short step sides are available so the long sides could go to someone that needs them. Frame is relatively simple, but will always be a modified frame. I like the long and low GMC's.

That would be me. Looking to replace place the PO flatbed with the stepside.

LordDevlin... PM me if you decide to off load the long bed.

BTW, nice looking truck!

Yep that's a looong bed , 97" long.

Just like the one I saved from the crusher, even though I have no use for it.

Re: 59 gmc loooong bed

It's my understanding that long beds were 89" until early to mid '57 then they changed to the 97" bed. I have a '57 Chevy with the 89" bed. I like long beds
