All 5 of mine have period correct. Today at the good guys in Dallas I found a set of 1969 Texas truck plates that were never installed on anything. They still had the prison paper in between them! I will use them when I register my wife's 1969 suburban.

Re: Anyone running year correct plates?
We can register a previously un-registered year correct tag here in Florida but you have to send the actual metal tag to DMV Tallahassee to make that happen. The only one that I know of that did this never got his registration or his tag back even though he sent it registered mail. They also refused to compensate him for the "lost" tag.

Re: Anyone running year correct plates?
I have an original 1968 truck plate on mine. I had to take a color picture, e-mail to SOS and the approved. I paid a one time fee (I think it was $35.00).

Re: Anyone running year correct plates?
Ohio says that I can run one on the back but I have to buy regular historical plates and keep them in the truck. I don't have to run a front one. Every other car and truck is required to run front and back that's not historical. There's several to choose from on ebay cheap. I think Im going to do it.Only thing that worries me is that they say with historical plates you can only drive on Sunday, Holidays and special occasions. I see guys running everyday of the week though. Whats ya'lls laws say?

Also of note, insurance companies (at least in MI) will give a much lower rate for vehicles registered as "historical". I just had them quote a yearly premium for a '78 2wd Jimmy. $474 if registered with regular plates, $70 if registered with historical plates. I can't imagine my insurance costs if it weren't for the reduced historical plate rates. |

Re: Anyone running year correct plates?
I took the year correct plates off and put year of manufacture ones on . I think current tags when I see 'year correct" used for plates. Year of manufacture seems to be the common term used for tags displaying the year of your vehicle. In Maryland a vehicle has to be registered historic, you bring your tags in, they check to see if the number is assigned, if not you roll with them for a $25 one time fee for the YOM tag, but the historic tag still has to be renewed. You have to display both, just as back when they were current and the histooric tags must stay in the vehicle. The last one year-only stamped tags were '70. The '71s ran through '75 and stickers were used starting with '72. So, most you find display '75, unless they came off sooner. My K2500 has '72 farm truck tags. I just posted about them in the YOM thread yesterday. YOM and historic are actually the same thing. They are both historic tags and the YOMs are just vintage tags you are allowed to display once registered historic. But... you can get historic tags on a 20 year old vehicle and for YOM the vehicle still has to be 25. One funky thing is if it's a tow truck you can't register it historic. It sucks because tow truck insurance is very high, even if yoou never intnd to haul with it. I don't hear of the limitations being enforced by the police. It's your insurance you have to worry about

Re: Anyone running year correct plates?
I ran a 69 plate here in Ohio. You only need 1 Ohio plate because the DMV said it's too hard to find 2 good plates. You buy the historical tag and get the alternate tag form for $3.50? Keep the historical tag under the seat. On the registration, it has the alt tag info. Once you do that you never have to renew tags. The only thing is, a member enlightened me, that if you get involved in an accident, then it might become a problem.

Re: Anyone running year correct plates?
The original 1969 "Farm Truck" plates came with my long stepper. Cannot used them here in Maryland since they are North Carolina plates. So I have one sitting on the dash.

Here's what a 72 Texas plate looks like on a 72 GMC and as a bonus a 2013 model is in the back.

Re: Anyone running year correct plates?
I agree. I have at least 10 vehicles running YOM plates in MI. The application clearly states not to be used for routine transportation (I just mailed in another application yesterday). $35 one time fee and stays current as long as you own the vehicle.
Willowrun, As a fellow Michigander who runs YOM plates. My insurance Company also had a reduced rate. My agent told me that the first question out of his mouth after a claim would be "where were you going or coming from"? That was enough for me to pay a littler extra on my premium |
