Another junkyard rescue
I just saved this 1985 C10 SWB from the junkyard. The only thing wrong with it is the transmission. It will not shift out of first unless I manually down shift it, then manually up shift it. It is a nicely optioned truck and didn't want to see it scrapped. It looks like a standard turbo 350 trans without any computer or TV cable.
My question is what are my fix options. I'm hoping it isn't anything mechanically wrong with the trans. And maybe it is just the vacuum line or the electrical connector on the vacuum line for the shift module.

Re: Another junkyard rescue
I wish I could offer some advice on the shifting issue, but I can't..
But I have to say, I cannot fathom why someone would scrap a truck like that!! Nice rescue!

Re: Another junkyard rescue
Its also worth dropping the trans pan to inspect the linkage arm that holds the end of the shift cable-if its adjusted (by previous owner) incorrectly (as is the case often with the install of aftermarket carbs) then at part and WOT the cable tension can actually break that cable linkage. It basically bolts to the valve body and actuates a small piston-if it breaks/ninds, no shifting out of first gear.....and sometimes not out of park either.
Another cause could be a sticking/bad governor....try removing it, wipe the inside of the bore with a rag soaked in clean trans fluid and reinstall the governor. These are just some things I've encountered myself. |

Re: Another junkyard rescue
Thanks everyone. I'll check those things out. I also see the shifter is out of adjustment between the column indicator and trans.

Re: Another junkyard rescue
local junk yard(s) may have a transmission for one ...
a friend of mine scored a 700R4 w/ a GM Good wrench tag ( remanufactured, I am guessing ) on one for 100.-

Re: Another junkyard rescue
I got the trans issue fixed. The short hose from the modulator to the steel line was split. I still have two more issues to solve. It pulls to the right when braking, and the high idle solenoid doesn't seem to move in or out.
Anyone know how to set the cold idle and how to set the hot idle on this electronic quadrajet carb? Thanks again for everyone's help.

Re: Another junkyard rescue
with it pulling, I would pull the tire it is pulling to, check the rotor, brake pads, and remove dust cap for wheel bearings, inspect the grease, dirty, caked, dried out etc

Would truly have been a shame to destroy something of value--way to common today. (Cash for clunkers) I'd drive that clunker any day!
