1964 GMC 4X4 Longbed

Hey folks, I'm new to the forum here and I'm currently in the process of restoring a 1964 GMC factory 4WD fleetside longbed. I'll try to keep up with posting progress as it goes along.

Little background on the truck....
I am about the 4th owner. The last two I know of were from town. It was mainly used as a plow truck for years until a friend of my fathers bought it around 2004. He had plans to restore but didn't have the time. Over this past winter I was thinking about buying or restoring another truck and decided on this one.
It's in rough shape, but I know I'll be able to bring it back. When I do restorations (mainly tractors) I've always been one for stock look or darn close to it. So this what I'll be doing for the '64. Still up in the air whether to go chrome again or the standard white.

I've been reading through the FAQ index for the past week or so, but still have a couple questions to ask and figured you guys should be able to answer them, seems to be more info on the Chevys than GMC...

1. Would my truck originally have come with hub caps? I can't seem to find any pictures of 4WD trucks after '63 with them.

2. The original split rims were removed long ago, were they 16's or 16.5. I have a nice set of 16.5 with mud and snow tires that I'm thinking of using on the truck.

3. Does anyone have the paint code for the original interior color? I'd assume it's the same as Chevy....

That's all I can think of for now, I'm sure there will be more down the road!

Here's some pictures. Videos on my YT page- 5Tractorguy

Welcome to the forum and it looks like you have a nice optioned truck with custom trim, emergency flasher and power brakes. I think that no 64-66 gmc 4x4's came with hubcaps (but you could add them). Could you post a better pic of the gauges in the dash? If they are the oil pressure and ammeter gauges they could be factory options as well.

Welcome to the forum! Love the GMC 4x4's. My truck has the same Northeast plow history. You've got some nice trim on that truck, I'd be inclined to go with chrome but the white will be a lot cheaper. I'll enjoy watching your build!

I wouldn't mind selling you one, but those went back to the guy I bought it from.

Thanks! If I go chrome I have to find another chrome grill since this one is rotted through in a couple small spots. It's a toss up though, depends how many pictures of 4WD trucks I find with and without chrome, I like the looks of either style.

May leave them off then, probably keep the wheels painted black. Sure here's some pics...

Sounds like you got a good project there Mike. I like that '82 also! I have an '88 1ton dump that is my daily driver, 350tbi with TH400. Luckily at our house we have a paved drive to work on that is somewhat level, those pics were from my fathers friends place which is all gravel and dirt.

Finally got things rolling today on the cab. (I'm using the cab off the maroon parts truck and the gold Chevy cab for parts). Cut out a section of the drivers side floor along with rockers. Tacked in floor patch, cut door post to fit new piece and cut out for kick panel. My dad found some rust inhibitor stuff in a spray can that is supposed to be very good (it's a 2 part), and it came with a 18" wand. So I sprayed all up inside the door post to try and stem the rust. When the roof comes off for repair I'll spray the top half of the post.

I'm amazed at what you're doing to the cab. I'd be overwhelmed, and wouldn't know where to start!

Cool project! Looks a lot like what I started with when I got Big Ugly. These old trucks sure did get beating!

Re: 1964 GMC 4X4 Longbed

looks like you have enough parts to build with. And i thought my cab rockers was bad lol. As argonuat says these tk's were well used and abused. there wasn't a panel on mine that didn't have a dent, still have waves and some dents haha.----have fun with your build.

Got some more done on the cab yesterday. Finished tacking up the drivers side kick panel and door post. Then began removing the rocker from the passenger side. Didn't get as much done as I wanted to but at least it's still moving along!

Re: 1964 GMC 4X4 Longbed

Alright, long time no post! Had a busy month or so with tractor shows and side work. So the cab has been moving along slowly. As of now both sides have had the door post, kick panels, and floors completed. I'm working on the bracing on the underside now, that will be going back on this week. I pulled it off so I could replace that strip that runs along the bottom edge of the cab, there was a lot of blistered rust behind it.

Re: 1964 GMC 4X4 Longbed

More progress!

All the bracing is back together on the bottom of the cab. I also made a frame for it to sit on so we can move it around and flip it.

Now that it's back into position the roof has been pulled along with the firewall. I spent the past two weeks concentrating on the front where the firewall goes. Did a lot of patch work around the vent bucket holes and made a new top lip where it spot welds together. Got that all ground smooth after work today, still have to knock some of the metal flat in that area.

Next I'll be fixing the firewall from the Chevy donor cab. I need to weld new bottoms to each side where it attaches to the floor and cut out for the 4WD hump.

Then onto the roof. All the bracing on top of the door posts has to be done, the top door jamb on the passenger side (taking off Chevy cab), and the front windshield-to-roof lip, that piece I ordered new.

Let me tell ya, you southern/west coast guys on here who complain about cab rust and rot have a cake walk compared to what this cab has been!! Nothing like some good 'ol northern road salt....
