van column intermediate shaft help
Ok, I have checked the FAQ and cant seem to find this info. I picked up a 79 van tilt column today. The PO had it in his 57 so when he upgraded to an ididit he kept the intermediate shaft to use on it. What years intermediate shaft have the 36 spline end and not the bolt thru. Also what other cars/trucks use that shaft.

Re: van column intermediate shaft help
You can get a 70's intermediate shaft and cut the end that attaches to the column shaft and use a 36 spline to DD u joint. Check out post #35 here. http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...=259536&page=2 I have been running this set up for along time.

Re: van column intermediate shaft help
Thanks for the reply, I was trying to avoid the u-joint solution I priced one local for just under a hundred bucks. I guess it is just a walk the yard moment till i find one that is 36 spline.

Re: van column intermediate shaft help
I’m not sure if this will help or not, but when I first added power steering to my 1960 GMC back around 1992, I used the intermediate shaft from a 1979 (?) Monte Carlo. I believe it was a 1”x36 spline factory u-joint at the top. Photos can be seen on post 1367 of my build thread (page 55) of my build thread.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...444502&page=55 The third photo show the assembled unit, and the next picture shows the u-joint disassembled – in case anyone wondered what they look like inside. Ultimately I cut the top off the shaft, ground the sides flat and used a double d Borgeson joint to connect to the new Ididit column, which is shown further down the page.

Re: van column intermediate shaft help
I'd think you could get 2 shafts from a 92 or so Jeep Cherokee, pull them apart and use the 2 splined ends. They have a D shape to them so you'd need to round the D, or make the D in the other parts. These cost $12 at picnpull. No doubt there are self serve scrapyards near you.

Re: van column intermediate shaft help
I am in the process of replacing the column in my truck and have a question with regards to using the Universal joint instead of the standard column coupler on the intermediate shaft. The steering column side is 3/4" 36 spline. The intermediate shaft side has a pin that you would hold 2 square bearings ind a spring with loads of grease. If I want to replace that grease coupler with a joint, do I need to cut the shaft down to the DD portion? Or can I just knock out the pin and remove the sleeve and use a 3/4" smooth u-joint?
