Turn Signal Assemblies Falls Out of Hood

Here is a really simple question. On my 1966 C10 both of my turn signal bulb assemblies fall out of the turn signal lens housing assemblies, when I close the hood. These are the newer white bulb assemblies from Oreileys, btw.

Am I missing a step for installation or what?

If not then I am going to engineer something to keep them in place. Any great ideas?

Thanks,
Jason

Re: Turn Signal Assemblies Falls Out of Hood

Is it the bulbs or the whole lamp bezel?

It's the white plastic fittings that hold the bulbs and slide upward into the holes in the hood.

Re: Turn Signal Assemblies Falls Out of Hood

There is a slot on the fitting that has to be lined up on the housing or it will not seat all the way. The notch will go towards the hood.

Thanks,

I pushed it in with the notch lined up, and seated it all of the way,but it still falls out.

You would think that it would have an adjacent slot and notches on the assembly so you could line it up, push it in, and turn it.

I have the dorman 85818 fitting....It had those before and I replaced them with the same thing. Are they correct?

They look correct....and the part # shows correct from Dorman.

you say that they slide upward into the assemblies?
are your housings in upside down, because the bulb assembly should plug into the top of the housing.

You are exactly right! I knew that there had to be something that I was missing. The housing were already in place when I got the truck and I have never messed with a truck like this, so I had no idea.

I'm going to go resituate them in a while.

Thanks a lot

Re: Turn Signal Assemblies Falls Out of Hood

Have you oiled your hinges and latch assembly? Don't slam the hood?
I have watched this happen time and again.
I have seen reproduction sockets that are all steel, not plastic, not sure where to get them though.

Re: Turn Signal Assemblies Falls Out of Hood

Now I understand the problem. The socket is falling out. You should be able to push straight in after lining up the slot . Make sure you did not break the clips or bend the metal contacts.

Thanks you very much for the offer and thanks to everyone who posted.

I wonder if these are occasionally installed upside down by other, like mine were. I knew there was something odd that I was missing when I couldn't find information on google!

No problem and an easy fix. Be careful when removing the 2 screws that hold the housing on....there are nuts welded in the hood and I have seen them snap off. I'd spray them down and just go easy on them. Shouldn't take more than 5 min to reverse them.
