Trade questions

Hey guys I'm over on the 67-72 side and I have some questions. I am thinking about trading my lq4/4l80 swapped c-10 for a nice 59. Ill admit I have no idea what I'm looking as far as these trucks go. What should I look for and what's desirable? Here are some pictures of the truck.

Re: Trade questions

Looks like a nice GMC that's largely stock except for the car 5 lug Rally's. These truck were 6 lug in the half tons. Is it still running the stock suspension and brakes?

Basically impossible to know if this trade makes any sense without seeing the C10 and knowing the mechanical condition of the '59. Not to mention level of rust in both! '55/59 rust issues are cab corners, front fender rear corners, door bottoms, "brow" over windshield, possibly rain gutter area if caulking is damaged. Headlight eyebrows too sometimes. These are just the common areas.

What are your goals for the '59? Drive as is? IFS? Modern or stock drivetrain?

Re: Trade questions

My 68 has a lot done to it. The lq4/4l80 swap, ece drop kit, cnotch, disc brake swap. My truck has had the cab corners and inner and outer rockers done but they where not installed correctly and are rusting. the floor is solid and bed has no rust. The 59 I would drive as is. The owner says it needs cab corners and some body work.

Re: Trade questions

No way Donaldo! Plus ive been told if I paint it I would get beat up. I drive it a lot and if I painted it I wouldn't want to drive it. I am trying to talk the guy into trading me that 55 shoebox for it but he is on the fence about it.

Re: Trade questions

Have you spent any time driving a 50's truck?
Years ago I restored a 54 to original but found out I wasn't happy with it. These old trucks are no fun at interstate speeds, poor brakes, if it's original 6v system it's hard starting especially when it's already at normal operating temps. This is just my opinion but for something to drive regularly they are cumbersome at best.
I'd keep the 68.

Re: Trade questions

I have not popcoprn. I realize the truck I am looking at is not what I have. If I could I would just buy the 59 but that's just not an option. I am supposed to meet the owner this weekend to look at the truck. If I got this it would probably be put back to stock and just be a around town truck.

Re: Trade questions

Yea, it would help if he'd let you go on a good half-hour drive. Stop at a store and shut if off and go in to see if it will restart when hot.
I know I'll probably get grief from some here for saying it but I just don't like driving original 50's trucks, and I'm 67 years old.

Re: Trade questions

Im sure he would he is pretty honest about the truck even told me his truck isn't worth what mine is worth. I bought my wife a 58 dodge coronet and we left it stock also. It does have power drum brakes though but the car is a dream to drive. I would like to keep this one as stock as possible. So pretty much the same problem areas to look for as on the 67-72's cab corners rockers and drip rails? Are front end parts readily available for these trucks?
