Oil recommendations for 400 small block?

Hello, everyone. I just purchased a '53 3100 with a small block 400. It definitely needs an oil change and I'm curious if anyone has any recommendations? I'm sure there's a million options but just looking for something simple that will get the job done. Do I need something with zinc? Forgive me...I'm new at the classic truck thing. Thanks in advance!

Re: Oil recommendations for 400 small block?

Here we go.... I use 10W40 Valvoline. In AZ and Texas I used 20W50. I change my oil every 3K miles. Learned that from the original Orrie in the 50's and have never had an oil related issue. Valvoline because of the quality and they gave me free oil when I raced in the 60's.

Thanks for the info! So all the zinc talk is nothing worth listening to?

Re: Oil recommendations for 400 small block?

At our shop we add a zinc additive to a newly rebuilt motor, and usually also at the first oil change(which I cover as part of the build). After that, it's on the customer what he wants to do. My builder says it's only needed during break in, and we've never had an engine failure.
