60-66 4x4 Frames
Does anyone know if there are any differences in the 4x4 frames of these years? As far as what bodies will fit what frames...etc?

Re: 60-66 4x4 Frames
Is there a vin # or partial on the frame to determine what year the frame is...or is there something obvious about the frame to determine what year it is?

Re: 60-66 4x4 Frames
Well....I am buying a nice 63 big window cab and it has a 3/4 ton 4x4 frame that comes along. The cab is a 2wd cab. I do not know what year the frame is. Sorry if I was vague but wasn't trying to....I guess I can ramble sometimes

Re: 60-66 4x4 Frames
Not sure if this helps, 64 K10 has last part of vehicle identification number stamped in frame top rail drivers side, above drag link. The first part of the ID number is not stamped which would be more helpful to you.

Re: 60-66 4x4 Frames
if it is a 63-66 frame , then the 63 cab will just bolt on, if it is a 60-62 frame then you need to drill a couple holes for the front cab mounts to work.

Re: 60-66 4x4 Frames
The frame will have the VIN stamped on the top flange of the frame between the steering box and the engine mount on the drivers side. Then you will need to decode it to find out what year it is.

Re: 60-66 4x4 Frames
The cabs are no different between 4x4 and 4x2. We can tell what year the frame is based on the crossmembers and body mount brackets.

Re: 60-66 4x4 Frames
1960-62 K1000 frame GMC J-N Series
1960-63 K10 frame ( In 1964 the motor was no longer supported by the front crossmember.) Rear shocks were mounted parallel to the frame in 64 as compared to the V style of the earlier years. The drag link between the steering box and axle changed from a ball type setup inside a tube to a cast tie rod setup.

Re: 60-66 4x4 Frames
1960-66 frame dimensions
Frame dimensions are as follows: 1963-66 ½ ton 2WD: 6-1/32 x 2-1/2 x 5/32 ¾ ton 2WD: 6-1/8 x 2-17/32 x 3/16 One ton 2WD: 8-1/8 x 2-13/16 x 3/16 ½ ton 4WD 115” WB: 8-1/32 x 2-25/32 x 9/64 ½ ton 4WD 127” WB: 8-1/8 x 2-13/16 x 3/16 ¾ ton 4WD: 8-1/8 x 2-13/16 x 3/16 As you can see, even the ½ ton 4WD long bed uses the same size frame member as the one ton 2WD. 1960-62 frame ,measurements ½ ton 2WD: 5-15/32 x 2-1/4 x 1/8 ¾ ton 2WD: 7-3/16 x 2-3/4 x 3/16 ½ and ¾ ton 4WD: 7-13/64 x 2-3/4 x 3/16 ron |

Re: 60-66 4x4 Frames
The 60-62 K model frames had the single horseshoe motor mount, mount was in the front of the tubular cross-member for I6 trucks, the rear for V8 trucks. Mine was hacked so I had to fab one up. The GMC's had a plain cross-member and used the more conventional side mounts for their V6. Also at the rear of the frame they're mounts on the side of the frame to accommodate the wider rear bed sill on the 60-62. The rear shocks mount forward of the rear axle for 60-62 and 63-66 have one mounted forward and the other to the rear.

Re: 60-66 4x4 Frames
Correction on the rear shock mounts. 60-62 are mounted off the spring pad, or maybe its the block, and tilted to the centerline of the chassis, like in the pic above. 63-66 they are mounted to the axle tube and both tilt forward.
