Steering column spring question

OK I feel stupid but I took my steering wheel off months ago with intentions of replacing the turn signal canceling switch. Now I'm finally putting it back together. Where does the spring go? Is it sandwiched between the wheel and the turn signal canceling cam? My truck is a 1966 C20 with an automatic column.

I thought the spring was in between the wheel and the turn signal switch. But I cant get the wheel on the with the spring their.

This is the diagram I was using as a reference. Below are are pictures of my column.

I thought it went below the lower bearing and you should be able to see it from under the hood.

I think that heavier spring goes under the lower bearing - bottom of column - inside engine compartment.
The softer spring goes in blinker housing.

I'm still trying to figure everything out.
Did you have that smaller upper spring, or did you do something else?

When you posted that picture I was thinking I don't remember putting any spring in my column. I was thinking am I missing that spring? I put my column back together last fall I know I ended up with no spring under the horn button. But I also could't get horn to work right. Every time I turned the wheel it went off. I just wanted to get the truck on the road so I unhooked my horn and figured I would deal with it this spring.
