Speedometer question
I have replaced my transmission and now I have no speedometer or odometer. I have removed the cable from the transmission and spun it and it works, I replaced the gear in the transmission with the one that was on my old transmission. Nothing! I put the gear on the cable and it fits good. I pulled the cable and put a small screwdriver in the gear and tried to turn it both ways. I seems tight and will not turn. I looked into the hole and the drive gear looks fine. The driven gear looks fine too. Could the cable be just too long as it looks like the area where the driven gear stops is kind of shiny like the cable could be hitting? I searched for speedo problems and one fellow said that he took his to the dealer and the mechanic shortened the cable and it worked fine. Could I just take a 1/4" off the cable and see if that fixes it?
Thanks for any information. Ron |

Re: Speedometer question
Same problem I had, I even replaced the speedo. Went down and bought a new cable and housing from NAPA, my old cable must have been too short for some reason. I bought the truck as non-running so I don't know if it worked before.

Re: Speedometer question
I just tried to pull the cable out of the housing from the transmission end. Shouldn't the cable pull out?

Re: Speedometer question
Depends. The cable will have a little stop built into one end. If that end was put up at the speedometer then it will not come out from the bottom. Did you look to see if the drive gear in the trans is in the right place? Since it worked before the trans swap I would look at the trans.

Re: Speedometer question
PGSigns, I did look into the hole and it looks to be in the proper location, but of course I was looking into a mirror but it looks like it should connect to the driven gear, and when I used the screwdriver to try and turn the driven gear to see if it was connecting to the drive gear it would not turn so I assumed it was connecting.

Re: Speedometer question
Not sure why it won't work then. Guess its time to check the cable.

Re: Speedometer question
Hook all back up. Put in neutral with back wheels off ground. Spin BOTH of them & see if speedo works. Will tell u a lot, including whether driving gear to driven gear are meshing and actuating/spinning--the 1st link in the chain..
