Side windows have gap at top

Hello,

So I reassembled my doors today and I replaced all of the weather strip and seals.

Neither window rolls up far enough now. The drivers side is probably ok but the passenger side has a bit more of a gap.

It seems that my new lower horizontal fuzzy pieces (anti rattle strips?) from classic parts.com may be the problem. The window channel seems to hit the fuzzy parts before the window is up enough. I searched and others mentioned this.

I sure hate to take it all apart again, but has anyone tried grinding on these strips? Are there better strips that can be bought?

I also considered removing the (new) upper rubber piece on the door, that the top of the window sits in and adding something at the top to shim the rubber down a little. It seems to recess a little more than it should. If it were a little lower, the window would meet it.

I hate to be negative but reproduction parts can be so disappointing. Sellers should consider the problems that they cause over and over again. Its irresponsible.

Any thoughts??

I have the same problems,I have bought from 5 different vendors and all of the rubber parts are the same in my book,the orginals lasted 50 years, and this stuff dosen't last more than a couple weeks,of all the ups and downs of my build the rubber parts have to be the biggest letdown,IF anybody has found good rubber pieces Id like to hear about it.sorry for the rant but it really ------ me off!

Thanks for your reply. I took both windows out after installation and inspected everything. I had a little urethane caulk that had seeped from the channel when I pushed the glass in. I trimmed it with a razor blade and that allowed the window to close a little more.

After looking it over and having an experienced mechanic glance at it too, I am almost sure that the problem is the channel hitting the lower horizontal felt. It seems to me the felt piece may be wider than original. The felt only fits in one way, because the rear is curved to match the contour of the window opening.

Is there a specific arear that you think could be installed incorrectly? I'll try to take general photos today. If there is a specif area that you want to see, let me know.

My 68 was doing this same thing. At the very most front and rear spot where the fuzzy goes over the top of the rubber window channel I took a screw driver and "tapped" them in a bit, and it seems to have given me room to roll the window all the way up.

I had the same problem when I replaced the window rubber on my 66. I had about a 3/32" gap along the top of the glass when fully closed. If I cranked it any more, the metal frame at the bottom of the window would start pushing on the bottom of the door felts. This sounds like the same problem you are having. What I did to fix this is to reset the window glass a little higher (3/32") in the bottom frame. This fixed the problem. I did not check the depth of the glass in the metal frame before I first took it apart, which I should have done. I would be willing to bet that it was not bottomed out in the frame the way I re-installed the glass and got the gap. I hope this helps.

That's exactly what I thought. I struggled with the setting tape so I used urethane caulk. I have been told that it would be very difficult to get the window out now....

the window urethane chalk is tuff stuff to cut a window back out of .
I had to do it on a 1926 locomobile that I was restoring
to replace the glass that was put in the wrong way .

The channel on the bottom of the glass is the culprit. That lower channel needs to be centered on the glass between the vertical fuzzys . I usually assemble the glass in the door and then glue the channel on the glass and roll the window all the way up till the glue is dry. By glue I mean silicone adhesive or whatever you want to use.

I install my glass the same way.

I had the same prob and decided that the top rubber seal was pushing too far up into the slot in the door above the window. You can see a slight channel in the rubber piece where it is supposed to sit, but if you push on it, it will go further. I pulled my replacement rubber, the long one that goes from the vent all the way down the back of the window glass, out and put some 1/4 inch high by 3/4 inch wide foam weather strip tape from lowes behind it. The tape sticks on one side only and I stuck it in the track where the rubber window channel was removed, then replaced the window channel. It also help near the bottom back of the window to keep the rubber from pushing back too far. In fact, I had to use a double layer where there was a deppression near the bottom. Feel with your finger and you can tell what I mean. After doing this, I had to get tin snips and trim off the fuzzy window wipers that go in the bottom. I used trial and error and prob cut off between one half and three quarters of an inch on both the inside and outside fuzzy wipers.
